Well don't tell me Owen regularly gets better service playing up front for that shower of no hopers than our strikers get at Liverpool. Cast iron, guaranteed goals for a ridiculously low fee. No brainer for me. The priority is winning the title and he would improve our chances of doing so.

Well considering the service to our front men is next to non-existant I would say yes Owen has had better service.
Maybe we still need a creative player rather than a six yard box player.
The reason Torres has been so good for us is he scores and creates for his self, how many chances was Kuyt given in the last match? How many does Keane get in an average game?
Not many.

Good post Rushie, although I think if we can't afford a creative player Owen is probably the next best answer. At least he will put away most of the few chances he will get.

If we cant create chances with a midfield consisting of the likes of Gerrard, Alonso , Benny and Riera then there is a bigger problem then which forward we should buy!

Well both of Owens goals for Newcastle at the weekend were as a result of clever runs, (as most of his are). The first one in particular requred an awareness to open himself up for the pass which Kuyt doesn't have, and Keane currently isn't showing. The second was a case of timing his arrival into the box at the optimum time to give himself the chance to score a goal.

I'm no big lover of the lad meself, and I think he's not the player he once was, but he would certainly improve our squad I should think. Anybody disputing that is probably allowing prejudice to cloud their opinion. We brought Egg Nog on as a replacement striker the other day with half an hour to go, is Owen better than him?

I don't know why this topic is still open - Rafa has come out and said we are not going to sign the man and thats that.

Why don't we open a topic about if Eto would suit the team and if so could he run around better than Keane or head the ball better then Kuyt

Its not going to happen people - get over it

for all the people that don't want owen should watch the stoke or fulham game and just look for the times when we needed aq striker to gamble in the box or be calm in front of goal....... i am gutted that keane isn't settling but it is the fact that maybe it is just too much for him and the deal for lennon and o'hara plus cash should be changed to include pennant at any cost we should lose that money grabbing diou impersonator

Owen would be a great bit of business but I believe the manager when he says it isn't going to happen although, If Torres was to go down with a long-term injury (touch-wood) then it would be a different matter. I can't recall the manager EVER playing two out an out 'play on the shoulder' front-men together in the same (starting) side. it's not his way, he likes one up or a 2nd withdrawn striker to play (cue Rafa favourite soundbite) "in between the lines". Therefore, we would likely never see Torres and Owen in the same side were he to sign him.

maybe Rafa is playing down the Owen buy remember what happened last time he went for english lad they tryed to sell him for 50% over his asking price.

If he sounds like he needs him newcastle might try to take the pi.ss but if he plays it down then puts in a smart bid of the cuff he might get owen on the cheap.

I think (ok well hope) Rafa isn't stupid and puts his pride behind to pick up a player who would really give us the cutting edge comming in to the late season.  :grinning:

I disagree I think owen and torres would work really well together.

Torres just deeper then owen would work as torres likes to turn on ball and run at defenders owen likes just to be on end of moves.

So how could it not ? Remeber they are both really smart players and really smart players find ways to work together.

In fact I would be errr you not what in my pants if I seen them both on the team sheet.  :D

               Riena
Arba    Carra     Agger     Insua

                Masch

Gerrard                        Riera
                Alonso

            Torres
                      Owen

How would that team not get any one turned on hehe.

Observations on Owen

"He's injury prone"

Well so apparently are Torres , Agger and Aurelio, should we wind down their contracts and get rid at the first opportunity ?

"He's a t'wat , shown f'uck all loyalty to LFC"

Not the first "legend" to leave us of his own accord, just two examples,

Keegan, left us after wining our first European Cup (now the CL trophy) went to Hamburg (go figure)

Dalglish left us due to stress ,(no problem there) and yet , eight months later came back into football to manage Blackburn.

I don't give a f'uck whether Michael Owen loves LFC or the people who post on this forum, what i can say is that if the price is right, to dismiss the idea of signing the fella purely on "political" grounds is f'ucking ludicrous. In footballing terms he's up there with the best , wouldn't be surprised if he actually plays more minutes of football this season than Torres.

john craig wrote:Owen is definitely one of the players we should be looking at in January (if we have any money at all that is).

Other players we should be taking into consideration imo are:

Valencia
Guttierez (quality imo - I know he isn't long signed for Newcastle though)
Martins
Gudjohnson (cu.nt but a good player)
Heinze
Tuncay (very underrated imo)
Eboue (not long on his contract, far from flavour of the month at Arsenal, but still quality when actually played in his best position, which is right back)
Benny McCarthy (Out of the team at Blackburn, but has proved can score goals in the Premiership and could be a decent short term signing)

A controversial list, but we have to be fairly realistic.  Personally I don't think Rafa will be allowed to bring anyone in unless he sells.  Ideally he'd like to offload Pennant I reckon.  If he doesn't then I can't see us getting anyone.  Despite his injuries and the history I have to agree Owen would probably be the best deal we could hope for in January, but he would have to take a massive wage cut and I just can't see it.

Agree on that Guttierez John i like him a lot good player an works hard for the team an all.

I used to like Tuncay was outstanding when he played for Fenerbache but hasnt seemed to do the same thing here , Saying that though Maybe with a different quality of team he could shine again . Very intelligent player

Tuncay is a quality player. He almost scored a great goal against us earlier in the season, pure skill that was to hit the ball on the turn. Reminded me a bit of Fowlers movements for his goal against Brann.
