I was at the carling cup game at spurs lastnite and i must say Dossena looked awful, going forward he looks ok but defensively he was missing. Degen fair play to the lad he has not played but his performance left me wondering why benitez did not start with young Steven Darby, he looked much more assured when coming on.

I agree this is a major problem in our squad, we may have strength in debt but have we got the quality???

Before Dossena joined us, we had a Serie A fan on here saying he played as a wing back (as I recall) Udinese had a pretty awful defensive record last season but this season it looks a lot better! :laugh:

(only four better than Udinese's GA so far)

Last season Udinese finished with -5 GD, conceded 53 goals in 38 games and the worst was only NINE worse than that - Parma with 62. Obviously that's not all down to Dossena, but I'm sure most on here would think he was hardly rock solid and not all the goals came down the middle or opposite flank.

So in the summer we buy two new FBs, one gets injured every time he plays so we might as well have not bothered, while the other is less than convincing and just another LB signed who looks pretty ordinary.

I was thinking only yesterday that Hughes looking to sign Warnock for Citeh was a bit funny (in terms of them having lots to spend, hardly the most ambitious signing), still reckon he would have been a better option than anyone we've signed since or even for a long time before.

Not for the first time he again looked cool under pressure ,took the :censored:

out of an oppo player by more than once wrong footing and sticking him on his a'rse , put in some high quality crosses (e.g for Kuyts goal) .

Next to Kuyt , probably our most underrated player from the opinions expressed in this forum. Ok he's not the aggresive "Barney Rubble" no nonsense built like a brick sh'ithouse fullback some of us would prefer BUT this fella can play football. :buttrock

Yeh he is, aurelio is a very good player, can pass a ball, overlaps and is a decent defender. His passes and crosses are quality, I hope he keeps on staying fit because it will build up consistancy and confidence for the player.

Agreed, Woof. I rate Aurelio and think that he provides real quality from wide areas while still being reasonably solid defensively. If he could just stay fit...

Aurelio had a decent game yesterday I wont get carried away with one or two decent perfromances as more often than not he's accident waiting to happen.

He did produce yet another sloppy piece of play yesterday, when the backline had pushed up nearer to the center circle. A Bolton Player just knocked it long over to our fullback to nobody, Aurelio causually jogged backwards to collect the ball. Then looked over his shoulder to see a Bolton player chasing the ball down by that time Aurelio's options of knocking it back to Reina had gone and he had to knock the ball out for a throw near our by-line. Intitially there wasnt nothing in it but because Aurelio had gone to sleep he gained 60 yards in territory for Bolton.

Good cross though for Kuyt and in general for his standards he had a good game.

Underated though ... He isnt :buttrock

Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa insists he is in the dark over supposed interest from Atletico Madrid.

Atletico are reportedly monitoring the former Real Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna full-back with a view to bringing the Spain international back to his homeland.

However, when asked if he knew anything about that speculation, the 25-year-old Arbeloa said: "No. I have a contract with Liverpool for one more year. We've not spoken about renewing it, not knowing if (Liverpool manager Rafa) Benitez will continue...It seems to me a little soon to talk about this.'

Aurelio like Kuyt seems to be improving every game lately, he's far from the complete article though but is becoming decent.

He put in a sound performance yesterday - didn't do a great deal wrong at all. Just nice and tidy, and came up with a great assist.

Dossena he aint.

I was thinking to open a thread about him, as I'm watching the player I was used to. I always liked a lot this player.

Not only the crosses, in min 15 he deceived the opposition player with a kind of dribble we call "recorte" (I would love to know the english term for it), and he seemed the Fabio Aurelio of old.

I'm just missing his deadly free kicks. But note that whenever a free kick is there, he's around with Gerrard and the usual players, which must mean in the training sessions he's decent on that, as he hasn't been removed from the responsability.

On the underrating Woof, I disagree partly. I'd say that people of newkit didn't know Fabio Aurelio well, because whenever he had 2 decent games he was injured. People is tired of Kewell cases and it's normal that people lost a bit of patience. In fact, Rafa did buy a player for his position at the start of the season. Last season he had to play Arbeloa in the left because of Aurelio's injury, and that's not an ideal situation.

So it seems like Arby really does see his future at the club tightly connected to Rafa's. But if the club is beginning to look at new contracts for Rafa, Agger and Kuyt in the near future, then Arby should and probably will be next on that list. He's grown to be quite an important member of our team, both due to his good performances and his versatility (though I'm not too pleased with him at CB

), aswell as the fact that our other RB is quickly turning into the new Kewell (and by the few looks I've had of him isn't really that great either).

and he is only 25 too. considering how lacking our fullbacks are, he is a major player in the team now.

Apparently there's been talk that Juventus want to take Dossena on loan in January. Personally I just don't see it.
