We'll need to play them at home first to be sure

I had to laugh when Tony Clulis and Rory DeCrap suggested there is more to Stoke than the long throw when their last THREE goals and TWO wins are both entirely down to that tactic. I think the problem is defences get their knickers in a knot over it, before the game's even started, when it's no more dangerous than an accurate cross. Apply the basics of defending, the ball may be "in the danger area" but defences that panic at any type of cross should be playing lower league football. I'm sure the tactic will lose it's psychological grip on teams that fear it and Stoke will be found out because of the rest of their game. Even though we failed to score, I said before we played them that even if they got a goal or two from long throws that we should be looking to score two or three ourselves - sadly we didn't

There's a bit more to defending a throw like delaps than there is a cross Owz. It's int he trajectory and the fact it's being aimed into the goal or very close to it.
I wonder how long it is before a team defends it with their goalkeeper. Get the keeper out in front of the attackers and then the fecker has to throw it up and over the goalie, that should sort it out.

Very interesting thought, mate. I could see a team devise a wicked little counter-setpiece play off it, if you will. Imagine it's us that's defending. With Reina's quickness and distribution I think we could come up with something where he looks like he's staying on his line but, as the throw comes in, a teammate's movement creates a hole for him to claim the throw. Meanwhile, someone with a bit of pace and finishing (Gerrard or Torres), peels off from the back of the area and gets downfield sharpish to latch on to Reina's quick kick or throw. Good chance we'd catch Stoke with their pants down and turn defense into offense in a flash.
