None of the 'big four' to play spudz this season has beaten them, at least we lost away to them and didn't concede a two goal lead - or two to the long throw merchants. I had to laugh when Tony Clulis and Rory DeCrap suggested there is more to Stoke than the long throw when their last THREE goals and TWO wins are both entirely down to that tactic. I think the problem is defences get their knickers in a knot over it, before the game's even started, when it's no more dangerous than an accurate cross. Apply the basics of defending, the ball may be "in the danger area" but defences that panic at any type of cross should be playing lower league football. I'm sure the tactic will lose it's psychological grip on teams that fear it and Stoke will be found out because of the rest of their game. Even though we failed to score, I said before we played them that even if they got a goal or two from long throws that we should be looking to score two or three ourselves - sadly we didn't :(

:p Yeah I know. I was just very fustrated to see us lose our lead over Chelsea that's all. It's been too long and just for a minute it looked like everything was going right for us.

There's a bit more to defending a throw like delaps than there is a cross Owz. It's int he trajectory and the fact it's being aimed into the goal or very close to it.

I wonder how long it is before a team defends it with their goalkeeper. Get the keeper out in front of the attackers and then the fecker has to throw it up and over the goalie, that should sort it out.

It's a pity we lost but it was something that would happen sooner or later. I think it was Effes who posted that he'd like to watch the team reaction after the first defeat, and so do I, it's a crucial moment.

Being on top of the table is a good thing, because it gives you extra fuel. The same team, on top of the table, will always have extra fuel. Teams playing against you unconsciously are more cautious, try to sit back earlier defending a draw, are "frightened" of you in a way. We're still there and we can't lose that wave.

This is like surfing, when you get to the top of the wave you have to stay there.

It's crucial we keep this position for some months and we get rid of a couple of rivals.

Come on reds!

One more thing very important at throw-ins, there is no offside rule so you have a lot of players already in the box.

But with our zonal marking system we should deal with them more easily than those using man-marking defence.

Very interesting thought, mate.  I could see a team devise a wicked little counter-setpiece play off it, if you will.  Imagine it's us that's defending.  With Reina's quickness and distribution I think we could come up with something where he looks like he's staying on his line but, as the throw comes in, a teammate's movement creates a hole for him to claim the throw.  Meanwhile, someone with a bit of pace and finishing (Gerrard or Torres), peels off from the back of the area and gets downfield sharpish to latch on to Reina's quick kick or throw.  Good chance we'd catch Stoke with their pants down and turn defense into offense in a flash.

We are so bad at protecting a narrow lead (Chelsea being the exception to the rule), we're better coming from behind. The confidence just falls away and we resort to Houliieresque defend deep and hoof.

Having said that, if you would have told me that we would be joint top after 10 games; that we would have beat the Mancs, the Bluesh#te and Chelsea along the way, without Torres and to some extent Gerrard. Plus having to contend with the disruption of the Olympics and other injuries to Skrtel, Babel and Degen, I'd have bitten your hand off.

I've been reading how "lucky" we've been this season and people celebrating that luck running out

- lost Skrtel for months
- lost Torres to injury on duty with Spain
- scored the winner against Stoke to have it incorrectly ruled out
- hit the post fucknose how many times against spudz
- hit the post against Chelsea

But because we come from behind, had players sent off against us etc then we're "lucky". Replace "Liverpool" with "Man Utd" and people would talk of resiliance, determination, fortitude, class etc when describing the same events. How is a player getting sent off "lucky"? Is any win where the opposition have a man sent off "lucky"? Plenty of teams play ten men and don't win. We've had some luck this season, we've had some bad luck as well - devils advocate in me might suggest the owners not blocking Keane's transfer like Barney's was bad luck :D

Just looking at the fixtures coming up, it's an ideal opportunity to get further ahead of United in the next few weeks. We have three very winnable games where as they have Arsenal away, Aston Villa at home and Man City away in their next 3 games.

And you can see Rafa using this tactic  ???   :D

On a serious note why didn't we use Riise for the long throws more, he used to do them but not so much towards the end of his time at Liverpool, was that a conscious decision by Rafa/Riise or was he just not bale to throw the ball in like that anymore. I think it's a very good extra weapon to have and we should pick someone in the team, send them down the gym for some upper body work and get them throwing the ball in like Delap, the more options you have the better No?
