and you were saying Ace about germany not convincing?! :D

Well, I guess tactically the germans were spot on, I thought that if they did change their team selection they would have a chance.

Good win for them

If I were a betting man I'd be laying on a wedge of cash for Germany to win it all now.  Not that they are necessarily the best team but because they have momentum and a winning mentality.  They had a wobbly start but look to back on form big style.  I'm sure the Croatians (who I expect to dispatch Turkey) will not relish meeting them again.

What a match from Schweinsteiger, BTW.  That run he made for the first goal was as beautiful as the 1-2s Podolski played down the touchline and the cross he put in.  Not to mention the two inch perfect free kicks he bent in for the other goals.  Before the match I wanted Portugal to win to shake things up but there's so much I admire about German football that I found myself rooting for them soon after kick off.  I still want either the Spanish or Dutch to do them in the final, though--I just wouldn't bet on it, is all. :D

The Portugal - Germany game was a very good watch.

The difference between the two teams was clear however - the Germans were far more disciplined and competent at the back.

Portugal played some very fluent football, easy on the eye stuff. Bosingwa had plenty of joy on the right, putting in some good crosses, getting in behind the Germans - in doing so putting their defence under a different type of pressure which is more difficult to deal with. From this avenue Moutinho missed a golden opportunity, and on such chances rest the outcomes to games.

Germany scored with a free flowing, cut-throat move which was a joy to watch. The ball from Ballack to Podolski was exceptional, Podolski showed good strength to hold of Bosingwa - though he should never in a million years have let him get past him. Schweinsteiger made a great run having evaded Ferreira who was simply ball watching.

Germany's two headed goals were a consequence of unbelievably poor marking/anticipation/positioning/strength from the Portuguese defence. The first was embarrassing enough, the second compounded an all round shocking defensive performance. Mentally their defense and goalie were absent.

Elementary errors which just shouldn't happen in the Q/F's of a major tournament, once is bad enough but twice shows there's a fundamental problem.

It was a shame that a great game like was decided by a second set-piece howler.

Hopefully Scolari can install some of that absent-mindedness in the Chelsea defence.

I hate to say it but prepare yourselves for a Germany-Italy final. No teams are better than them stumbling through the groups, only to come alive during the knock out stages.

I have to say that this tournament has been absolutely top class. Since the Italy-Holland game I don't think I've seen a bad game.

You must have missed the Germany-Austria game then, mate.  The co-hosts couldn't score in a brothel. :D

I said at the start of the tournament they were my favourites mate, i made a thread about what shirt to buy before it started and said in there that the Germans are always going to go far.
They hadnt been convincing until yesterdays game though and still look very vulnerable in the centre of defence.

Like you said though the reshuffle dropping the hapless Gomez certainly helped.

He looks poor, not the quickest, doesnt beat his man one on one very often and his final ball isnt great.

You do get glimpses of a player that can do something from nothing like the goal he scored against us for Benfica, but still he just reminds me of a Luis Garcia type of luxury player but without the goal threat.
