Russians looked an entirely different side tonight than they did against Spain and they were a joy to watch.  My first look at Arshavin and he's definitely a quality player.  Zhirkov was a real handful as well.  Pavlyuchenko got into great positions but his finishing--apart from the goal, of course--was mediocre.  But, overall, they were very impressive against a past it Swedish side.  Let's hope they bring that verve to their match with the Dutch.  If they do, it could be a cracker.

As for the other match, I only saw the highlights but Xabi looked well up for it: shooting from his own half as usual and just missing out with that howitzer off the bar.  Nice to see.

Xabis running the show Lando i know Spains gettin beat but you can see hes different class he is nearly scored from the half way line .

Cant believe rafa is selling him TBH and for less than barry feckin shame.

I agree, nothing against Barry but Alonso was class tonight but the ITV lot going on about fabregas all the time, who was that mysterious man who controlled the game, shot from his own half a la Pele and hit the bar, he must be worth loads of cash :p

from what i've seen in this tournament, at least 8 teams are on a completely different level to england. both russia and croatia (who we thought we had a god's given right to qualify ahead of) have played some football in the last few games that we could only dream of.

all in all, the quarters should be cracking games. for the good of football i hop it's portugal, croatia, holland and spain who prevail. however i've just got a feeling that the germans or italians might bore their way through as they seem to always do.

Xabi was man of the match by a country mile and totally outshone Fabregas but you wouldn't know it from the commentary last night.

What a tw@t Beglin is. All night it was Cesc this, Fabregas that. Saying it's all right Flamini leaving English football but it would be a total crime if Fabregas did. All the while Xabi's leading that snot nosed little turd through the game and putting him firmly in his f#cking place.

I'll give you Croatia mate but not having Russia, we battered them at home 3-0 and but for a mad couple of minutes would of got the result needed in Russia as well.
Granted technically they look far superior, but i would back us to beat them if we played them at a neutral ground.
Who are the other 6 teams as well mate ?
1 Spain
2 Holland
3 Portugal
4 Italy (not convinced)
5 Germany (definately not convinced)
6 Turkey (no chance)

if this had been just one inch to the right it would have been the goal of the tournament. we've missed seeing this kind of thing from xabi in a liverpool shirt.

it should work, ace. it does for me. but in case it still doesn't play for you i'll describe it

53 minutes and 5 seconds into the match.
alonso picks up the ball just in advance of the centre circle
no one closes him down so he takes a couple of longish strides forward with the ball
still no one closes so he absolutely mullers it towards the goal from getting on for 40 yards out
the ball spanks back off the inside of the left hand post and somehow goes over the dead ball line on the other side of the goal
'ooooooaaaaaaaaaooooohhhhh' scream the spanish commentators

The BBC, Cuatro, and other national medias make a filter to keep the bandwidth under control. That's why Andy G and me are able to watch that link and probably foreigners won't.

Xabi Alonso is getting a lot of praise from Madrid press, which is as if the ITV or SSN were giving credit to Liverpool players rathern than to the Mancs

Any chance Alonso will start ahead of Senna this weekend Sabre? (I assume he'll never start ahead of Xavi Hernandez.) ???

Boularouz's daughter dies
Born prematurely and died a few hours later apparantly.

Sad that.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

The media are pressing so that happens as everyone is praising Xabi.

If Arangones' words are true and yesterday was a chance to prove their worth Aragones would choose Xabi.

But my hunch is that he won't start and will enter the game in the second half.

P.S. Unless Aragones changes the system to a double holding mid, Alonso is not direct competitor for Xavi. Aragones' have played that system against strong teams (England away friendly IIRC, Italy at home recently) so it may be possible.

P.S. Even Rafa yells for Xabi Alonso playing. I mean Rafa Nadal who writes  a football blog these days :D

In Spain everyone talks about football.
