Its to hard to say if it will be a good move as they are different types of player. I am suprised we would sell to a rival but if Arsenal are prepared to pay anywhere near Rafa's valuation then so be it. Either Raffa thinks Barry will improve us more than Xabi will improve Arsenal OR it comes down to who offers the most for him.

I agree though having to sell to buy is embarrassing when it is our better players and not just squad trimming  ???

Selling a technically superior player to raise funds to buy a technically inferior player is - no matter which way you slice and dice it - plain stoopid !!
There is no logic to this whatsoever, and even the Platini rule can't be justification for it.
Stupid, stupid logic.
Keep Alonso; Leave Barry.
End of.

Spalletti Claims Liverpool's Benayoun Will Sign For Roma - Man City & West Ham Also Linked

Submitted by Jake Briggs on Wed, 2008-08-06 08:55.

AS Roma boss Luciano Spalletti has revealed that he will bring two new signings to the Stadio Olimpico. With Spalletti also claiming that one of them will be Israeli International Yossi Benayoun of Liverpool.

28-year-old winger Benayoun declared earlier this week that he had no desire to leave Anfield, but speculation continues to mount, with Manchester City and former club West Ham United also linked with a move for the Israeli.

However, Spalletti insists that Benayoun will be one of two arrivals in the Italian capital this summer.

“There will be two new signings,” Spalletti told Gazzetta Dello Sport.

“The names? They're the names you've heard. Menez and Benayoun are both top class players.”

Liverpool could be prepared to sell Benayoun as Reds manager Rafa Benitez raises funds for other transfer targets, with the acquisition of England International Gareth Barry from Aston Villa top of the list.

Selling Benayoun would be a grave mistake! He's an intelligent player and technically gifted. He's someone who can create chances out of nothing.

I wouldn't go so far as to class it as a grave mistake, but certainly agree that he's an intelligent player, surprisingly underrated by many fans. He did a decent job last season and he's looked one of the sharpest in the pre season games, I'd be disappointed to see him leave.

If it was a choice between selling Pennant AND Benayoun, or selling Alonso, I would keep Alonso. I would even throw Voronin in as well if it meant we kept Alonso.

Alonso may not have had the best of seasons, but he is still a top class player, Benayoun is a decent option but not imo top class.

Agreed on the point that if it is the difference between signimg Barry or not then I would sell Yossi to get Barry.

However I don't want to see too many 1st team squad players sold to make way for 1 big signing as we cant go into the season to light in terms of numbers.

However ... having seen (and I am not getting too excited just yet) the likes of Nemeth, Pachecho, Ngog etc in pre-season maybe he sees these guys as an "option" for the 1st team squad (i.e. a subs role like what Yossi played last year). You also have to bear in mind that Keane also offers us a similar type skills to Yossi (i.e. guile i front of midfield and off the striker) so Rafa might also look at that as why he might sell.

I know it's not Liverpool related directly, and sorry for that, but I think it will modify the transfer market in which we're moving in.

Ronaldo has said that he'll stay in Manchester despite he wanted to go to Real Madrid (official in "Publico newspaper"). What will do Real Madrid now with the 60M quid or so they wanted to waste? Real Madrid are compulsive spenders, they won't just sit down or make a low profile signing, IMHO they'll start shooting to everything that's shootable now. I wouldn't be surprised the rumour I heard about Alonso being part of Madrid's plan B in case Ronaldo affaire failed is true.

Seeing Alonso on a white shirt would be as painful as seeing him playing for Manchester for me, but considering Madrid are not our direct rivals in the leage, I would consider a Real Madrid-esque offer.

Real Madrid competed with Liverpool 4 years ago for Alonso and 2 years ago made an offer to Liverpool. Now Schuster is rumoured to like Alonso. Besides this old interest, Real Madrid do like to sign the best Spaniards, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Alonso as a natural target :m.

Let's see what happens. Hope Alonso stays, but the summer is so long...
