De Rossi bossed the midfield today, excellent player.

France were cr@p, Domenich is an idiot, he should have started Benzema long before, he was excellent today, the only french player who was dangerous.

He was dog poo mate and has been in all three games, how he scored 30 odd last season is beyond me. He looks slow, his first touch hasnt been bad, but the french gave him acres last night and his finishing was atrocious.
The one in the first couple of minutes when Abidal missed the header and he dragged it wide one on one was terrible.
He must of been clean through about 3-4 times and his composure and finishing was awful.
With a better striker Italy would of won that by 4 last night and the game should of been buried by half time.
Thought De Rossi was decent carrying the ball but when he attempted cross field passes 2 or 3 times they went about 10 yards over the player he was attempting to hits head into the crowd.
I have been very disappointed with the italians and Donadoni with his selections and substitutions.
Not sure who is in the squad but when they were playing against an ageing 10 man France in the second half why didnt he bring on another striker or an attacking player like Van basten did the other day, they were there for the taking.

Toni looks very good at holding play up and working with his back to goal.  As you say, though, his lack of pace was evident last night (clear through several times and caught each time) and his wayward shooting with just the keeper to contend with was baffling.

He seems to expect so:

Pepe Reina ready to impress for Spain

Jun 18 2008

Liverpool Echo

PREMIER League Golden Gloves winner Pepe Reina is ready to make his Euro 2008 bow in tonight's Group D dead rubber against Greece.

The Spain goalkeeper has been on the sidelines while Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas has conceded a goal in each game against Sweden and Russia.

But tonight he gets his chance to impress coach Luis Aragones against the already deposed holders.

“Even though we are already qualified for the quarter-finals we need to maintain the standard we've set in the first two games,” said Reina, who will be one of several changes to the Spanish side.

“There are 23 important players in this squad and we all need to be ready for when the coach needs us.”

Aragones claimed the Group D game in Salzburg represents the perfect opportunity for his fringe players to prove their worth.

“The principle reason for the decision is to rest those who have played so far, but it will also give the others a chance to make their mark,” he said, adding that only Andres Iniesta of the first choice team was likely to start.

But....Italy and Germany - rumbling their way through the tournament. Not at their best by a long shot - yet still managing a result where it matters - momentum gathering?

We've seen all this before.

In my eyes its a call between Portugal, Holland and Spain (Croatia outside bet) for the title. But never discount those two careful/battle scarred giants ominously coming up on the rails...

Agreed, Red.  If Portugal and Spain don't do the business in the quarter-finals I expect we'll see one or perhaps both of those nations in the finals.  They do know how to pace themselves and grind out results before hitting their stride.  For the sake of variety and flowing football, I hope that the Iberians deal them a double knockout. :nod

Agreed on all accounts.

As a side note, this is an important game for Reina, because his father made his debut game against Greece for the national squad.

Arbeloa and Alonso will play too.

By the sound of that last bit, we can also expect to see Xabi and Arbeloa get a run out. Should make the game a bit more interesting from a (LFC) red point of view, seeing as the game itself holds no real importance. Personally I expect to be watching the other game though (even though Spain are my favourites in the tournament), as it has plenty more at stakes. These knockout type of games almost always tend to throw up quite a spectacle (just think of Czech Republic vs. Turkey). Anyway, best of luck to our red men in action tonight... I hope they manage to make an impression on Aragones.

I'm sorry forr us, aswell. I respected Romania's football, but I respect Italian's mentality and will to win. You can't discard the Italians never. If they're about to die, you must finnish them or they'll have another chance to kill you -- and they will.

Well we may have similar problems, only for us the mind of the players goes out much quicker so we leave the stage much earlier :D

Good luck to Spain against Italy, I absolutely hate them when it comes to football, they should be taught a lesson! Too bad we did not take the opportunity to knock them out  :( Actually I was expecting a loss against Holland, but I was hoping France would get through, in the end I was almost more upset by Italy going through than by us (shamefully) going home.

Overall, it's been quite an entertaining tournament.

There's been a mix of :censored: poor, average, and outstanding games, but there've been slightly more of the average to good to outstanding ones.

The opening match of the tournament, along with the likes of Romania vs France, Greece vs anyone, were sh!te. Generally games involving Austria/Switzerland/Poland have been of poor entertainment value too, IMO.

Whilst I enjoyed Holland demolish France and Italy, it was disappointing to see two teams with enough ability to play significantly better, play so poor. Outstanding for entertainment because of the calibre of football and desire shown by the Dutch, but p!ss poor as contests. The best games occur when two teams are up for it and both perform to a standard befitting of their ability, that didn't happen in these games.

France have been dire.

1) They've shown fuck all desire and bottle (Malouda anyone?) - the absolute antethesis of the Dutch and as important as anything in football.
2) The balance of their team has been shocking, i) no thrust in midfield - Toulalan is a decent one touch passer of the ball, but offers nothing in terms of goal threat or athleticism/drive in the centre. Makelele - your archetypal holding midfielder. ii) Movement up front - non-existent, players not making themselves available (Anelka opening game, Ribery/Malouda), full backs not supporting at the right times.

Spain have been the next team after the Dutch. Opening game all went to plan. Arsenal like in style but with more cuting edge up front. Against Sweden the tempo of their passing wasn't as high and players weren't getting in position quickly enough - there were plenty of occasions where players could've been 5-10yds further up the pitch than they were. Their positioning and passing weren't quite on song, which was perhaps a psychological inhibition. The Swedes are wily old feckers who caused the Spanish the odd nervy moment in attack.

Germany haven't been as ruthless as they usually are, but they've progressed nonetheless, and remain a threat.

As far as I'm concerned it's between Portugal/Spain/Croatia/Netherlands, all possess the ability to go all the way. I don't see Italy winning it, or Germany, or Turkey/Russia/Sweden.

I'll go for a Croatia vs Spain/Holland final.

* A special mention for Kuyt btw, he's been excellent.

I'll add

3/ Zidane was one of the best players of the decade. His absence is a tough gap to fill again.
