Manchester United consider Mascherano swoop

Sir Alex Ferguson could be ready to stun Liverpool Football Club by coughing up £17million for Javier Mascherano.

The Argentine international has made a huge impression at Anfield since joining the Reds last January in a complicated move, which ensured he was still owned by Kia Joorabchian.

Rafael Benitez has been told he must find £17million before the end of the season if he wants to keep the former West Ham United player, and this is believed to have caused fractions at boardroom level.

Manchester United boss Ferguson has always been an admirer of Mascherano and considered signing him last summer, and it is being rumoured that he will willing to pay the asking price to land him now.

However, much depends on whether the Old Trafford boss can offload one of his existing midfielders to accommodate the Liverpool star, with Michael Carrick likely to make way should the need arise.

well to add to that and to make it look like it is going to happen, Radio five live just said that ..

Tottenham and West Ham set to fight for Michael Carrick.

If he is sold then i think we can say goodbye to Mascherano .

I'd be well upset if he goes.  The Americans must do whatever it takes to keep him NOW. If they don't then I genuinely feel that they will be on a hideing from fans.  They cannot afford to wait until the summer- just wish that they understood this and the fact that Maschers is one of the best players we have and probably one of the best holding midfielders in the world. There is bound to be plenty of offers for him. Sell him and we are back to square one.

where is this from mate?

I think it's absolute non-sense... man united has more than enough midfielders in anderson, carrick and hargreaves... not to mention scholes is coming back now...

we don't own him mate... he's on a loan deal...

it's about signing him permanently that we're talking about... where have you been?  :glare:

Don't think he would go to the mancs. Hasn't Mascher himself declared, that we are the only english team he would play for anyway? That being said, we should just cough up the money and end all these speculations, as we really need him to stay. Hell, this story about the mancs wanting him just might convince G & H to sign him on, as if their american wants him, then all of the sudden he might become all the more interesting to keep for our own americans, just so they'll get one over Glazier :D

LFC should break their banks to keep Masscherano, he is the best midfield player we have in our team, he is the one who provide all the security for S.G to move forward and does what he is best at.  It is Madness not to sign him for good.

We need a number of worldclass playmakers and key performers to create the powerhouse from which we will regain domestic and euopean dominance.

Mascherano is in that category. We shouldnt - cant - restrict ourselves to just Xavi and Stevie, we have to have the courage to flash the wedge and build a world class squad, and not just an isolated few players.

I´ll just get George on the blower....

Rafa Benitez has once again reiterated his desire to keep Javier Mascherano at Anfield.
The Argentine international has been in scintillating form so far this season with a series of man of the match performances that has alerted a number of Europe's top clubs.

But Benitez remains determined to keep one of his prized assets at the club.

"We know Juventus and other top sides are interested in him but we have the option," Benitez said. "Javier is happy here and wants to stay. We will do our best to keep him here."

The Reds boss remains keen to bolster his squad during the January transfer window with a defender in his sights. Despite speculation linking him with a move for a left back Benitez insists his top priority is a centre half.

"We are looking for a centre back and not a left back," he added. "We are working hard with the new owners and the Chief Executive to find an option."

Honestly cant see him goin down the motorway  :no

Mascherano: I want to join Tevez at Manchester United

On loan Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano admits he wants to join his former teammate at Manchester United with a permanent move to Liverpool unlikely to occur as the American owners are baulking over the £17m price tag set by MSI.

Mascherano - A target for United, Juventus and Real Madrid - wants to play alongside countryman Carlos Tevez once again after their adventures at Corinthians and West Ham.

The holding midfielder, rated at £17million, said: "I would like a new adventure in England because as each day passes it is looking more and more unlikely that I could remain at Liverpool.

“It’s simple,” Mascherano said. “With the time that has passed, it will now be more difficult for me to stay here because I need to do something about my future. It is a really difficult situation because I have been talking a lot about how I want to stay here, but it doesn’t depend on me. I have done everything to stay but the owners have to decide if they want to buy.”

Manchester United boss Ferguson has always been an admirer of Mascherano and considered signing him last summer, and it is being rumoured that he will willing to pay the asking price to land him now.

Mascherano added, "I would be happy to play for any of the other big clubs in England if Liverpool do not sign me permanently, but to play alongside Carlitos as well as people like Rooney, Scholes and Ronaldo would be my biggest dream of all."
