Well I only saw the second half live, and I've got to say that based on that, I think one or two people are going a bit over the top with their criticism. We never really got anything going in the section of the game that I watched, but we were down to ten men for the majority of it and to be perfectly honest, they never got anything moving either.
Now it seems to be fairly unanimous that we were even worse in the first half, but it is Away in the Champions League after all, and against a fairly decent outfit at that. Added to that, it's with a bunch of guys playing together for the first time in a couple of weeks (and that's not a dig about rotation I'm talking about the International break) so it probably wasn't wise to expect too much.
As for Gerrard being rubbish on the night, I'm amazed at some posters who claim to know their football jumping on the bandwagon basd on this match. Surely it's not just the press in New Zealand who have been reporting that the bloke has a broken toe? He was pretty ordinary when he played for England by all accounts as well so we'll have to stick it on his CV, "Steven Gerrard, one of the best midfielders in the World but not that great TBH when he's got a broken foot". One thing he did prove was that Rafa was actually correct in his case not to play him on Saturday morning, particularly after Englands manager disgracefully started him in both International matches. All that said were it not for the intervention of Queresma (who is clearly a very talented player based on last nights showing) then Gerrard, with the one moment of true quality displayed by anyone on the pitch in the second half would have slipped Kuyt in for the winner. No I'm not too worried that our captain has suddently become sh!te.
No, I had my problems with the way we approached the game at Portsmouth but we aren't the first team over the last few seasons who have found the trip to Portugal a difficult one. Their constant diving, complaining and crying disrupts the whole flow of the game and is designed to stop the opposition gaining any momentum. That it worked on us makes no difference, I am absolutely convinced that we will give them something to properly cry about when they visit Anfield, and by then all charges against underperformers will be forgotten.
The next game is the one to think about now. Time to get some momentum going again with a win which I'm certain we will get. WE've just come through two tricky fixtures, along with about a dozen changes to the starting eleven so a period of relative stability and a couple of wins is just what the doctor ordered.
