I notice not one person is saying start Crouch up front, I knew you guys all had good sense  :D  :D

Crouch sucks, I would much rather play Babel as a striker than Crouch, the winging, gangly, no heading ability, freak!!

I agree those who preffer the league rather than the CL this year.

I'd be happy if we go to the next round with just a second place, and I wouldn't rest any player in order to get the first spot in the group. That said, we have to assure the qualification for the next round as soon as possible, as CL is important aswell, moneywise and image wise. Players like Torres has joined Liverpool because theirhistory, but his main reason was that he wants to win things in a bigger club, and the two finals achieved this years had to do a lot with that decission IMHO.

As soon as we have the qualification for the next round "quite assured" I'd rest the best players in games of the CL.

Wouldnt go that far but im starting to feel the same way. I want the premiership so much mroe than this and this is starting to look more like a hindrance than something we should be really proud to be in.

i know its bad to say but we need to conentrate a lot more on the league.

that being said, i really hope we beat porto this week. it might be because maureen used to manage them but theres something about porto that just rubs me the wrong way.

no doubt torres and geard will start and we should get 3 points but a point away wouldnt be that bad a result.

2-0 liverpool torres and pennant

exactly. the word i was looking for is ''hindrance''

Group A is the only group that contains more than one former winner of the Champions League.

FC Porto and Liverpool have met twice, both matches taking place in the quarter-finals of the 2000-01 Uefa Cup. The first leg finished in a goalless draw at the Das Antas. Liverpool claimed the tie courtesy of a 2-0 victory at Anfield; Danny Murphy and Michael Owen were both on target within five minutes of each other in a 2-0 triumph.

European history

FC Porto won the Champions Cup in 1987 and the Champions League in 2004. They have won 38, drawn 27 and lost 35 of 100 Champions League matches.

Liverpool, last year's beaten finalists, are making their sixth group stage appearance having made their debut in the competition in 2001.

Current European form

FC Porto have not lost any of their last six European home matches.

The last opponents to triumph at the Estadio do Dragao were FC Artmedia Bratislava on 28 September 2005 (2-3).

Player and disciplinary info

The most experienced player in the current Porto squad as far as this competition is concerned is defender Pedro Emanuel, who has made 34 CL appearances. Lucho Gonzalez and Lisandro Lopez are the Oporto clubs' leading scorers in the current squad with four career CL goals each.

Jamie Carragher is Liverpool's all-time record holder with 53 CL appearances for the Merseysiders. Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch lead the current squad members in CL goalscoring, with six goals a piece.

Other miscellaneous facts

FC Porto lead the Portuguese league after four straight victories.

Liverpool are yet to lose a Premier League match this season.

Still don't feel right from last Saturday's draw. And it's a pity that I can't expect this BIG game with any excitement like some of you do. TBH, I'm looking forward to the Birmingham game much more than to this one. Not a right feeling, I know. Just cannot help it.
Anyway hope Torres will start and open his CL account for us .
A 1-0 win would be OK for me :p

Finnan          Carra          Agger       Arbeloa

Pennant           Mascherano     Gerrard       Babel

                  Torres            Kuyt

For once I'd like to see us actually start with our strongest team.

For me that's the one you've picked, with the exception of Alonso for Mascerano.  Alonso's form was patchy at best last season, but from what I've seen he's getting back to his old self this season.  I can see us getting a lot of possession in this one, and I'd say Alonso's a better player in possession that Mascherano, therefore he'd get the nod.

I'm also slightly tempted to plump for Voronin ahead of Kuyt.  Voronin's looked more of a goal threat to me than Kuyt so far this season.

Can't understand the criticism some are giving Babel.  He looks a class player to me.  Plenty of pace, strength and ability to carry the ball - attributes which for me vindicate his inclusion wide left rather than up front.  He may well look good up front too, but he'd certainly be in my best XI at present.

Get a good result in this one, and we're flying (obviously).

Rafa will know a lot about Porto (cos he knows everything about everything, dontcha know), and he will pick a side best suited to beating the bleating Portugese whiners.

Having said that, I'd go with:

                                      Reina

      Finnan             JC                   Agger           Arbeloa

Gerrard             Mascherano            Alonso                   Babel

                                Torres
                                             Kuyt.

I have just read (on another site) that Alonso is out for this match. So it looks like Masherano and Gerrard or Sissoko for this game.

My team :-

                       Reina

Finnan    Carra          Hyypia         Arbeloa

Pennant   Gerrard     Mascherano    Babel (maybe give Aurelio 15 mins)

                   Torres        Kuyt

My idea is early qualification....... and THEN we can rest players.

On the contrary to some comments in this thread I still love the CL and would much rather us win it than the EPL, theres just nothing better than being "champions of europe".

Babel should play ahead of Benayoun, and Kuyt ahead of Voronin.

Both were disappointing on Saturday.
