Anyone hear - Radio 5 last night

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby mynameisred » Sat Jul 17, 2004 9:53 am

Cant remember who was hosting the show between 8-9 last night but Harry Harris and some dude from the mirror had a disagreement about Liverpool yesterday. Harris was saying we are no better than the middle tier in the prem with newcastle , boro, brum etc and that us and the toon have some serious off the field problems. The other guy however claimed that Beni is working hard behind the scenes, has money to spend ,that Baraja was a cert to join, something is happening on monday and that two other players have been identified prob a centre half and a striker. Does anybody have any more info on this as I for one would love to see Gerrard and Baraja in the middle for us. There is a story in the mirror today claiming Saviola is joining but for all I know they may have found that 'Exclusive' on our forum yesterday. Anyone out there in the know? ???? ???? ???? ???
If not and you heard the show what did you make of their comments. Personally I think they are underestimating what Beni can do with the existing squad and if he can make a couple of purchases then its all good baby!!!

I didn't hear the interview but the suggestion of comparing us to Newcastle, Boro and Bermingham is laughable.  Last season we slipped behind Arsenal, United and Chelsea and standards have slipped in the last 14 years.....but we still win the odd F.A. cup, Uefa cup etc.

Newcastle haven't won a trophy since 1955.  They missed the boat when they had a good side in '96, but it'll be all doenhill for them now that Shearer, Speed etc. are on the wane.

I can only assume that comparing us Boro was a joke.  In fairness they show ambition by signing players like Viduka and Hasslebaink but they are past their best.  The best thing about Boro is that they are United's bogey team.

As for Bermingham they have just taken our cast off (Heskey) and also have Clinton Morisson up front...enough said.

If Vieira goes, I reckon Wenger might follow which will knock Arsenal for six.  Uniteds decline will continue as Fergie becomes another Brian Clough.  Top players have already turned down Chelsea so maybe the honeymoon is over for the three amigos: Abramovich, Kenyon and Mourinho.

Liverpool have Cisse coming in, we've secured Gerrard, with a bit of luck Owen will get back to his best, underperforming players like Kewell might get a new lease of life and we'll probabaly have one or two new quality recruits before the kick off.
You know what......premiership winners 2005 doesn't seem such a crazy thought anymore.

That would be the best prezzie you could send us Santa, although if you could hook me up with Rachel Stevens that would be run it close.

I don't see how you hooking up with Rachael Stevens would benefit anyone else, especially her ;p

I think, Sean, us winning the title this season rests a lot on Arsenal losing Vieira (he's definately their unsung hero), Fergie going senile and Mourinho being a bigger flop than 'Fear Factor.'

Optimism is good but I just can't muster that much.

We will be league champions......... come May 2005. An awful coach like houllier got us the treble in 2001 and 4th place last season. A great coach/tactician like RB will win us everything.

With Cisse already here, he just need to buy a pacy centreback. That should be sufficient.

And with blue s...h....i..t... looking more and more likely to get relegated, it should be a great next season for us.

I also 2nd that AF is the next brian clough....hehehehhe  :p

I dunno about Fergie, maybe I'm rating him too highly but he's a cluey guy and he's got a top assistant in Queiroz even if his spell at Madrid wasn't succesful.  Don't forget Sir Bobby Robson is older than Fergie and is still highly regarded.   I think Ferguson is going to bounce back stronger after his battle with Coolmore.  After all no one whose fought them has done nearly as well as the manc manager.

Its not Fergie we should be thinking about in regard of manures decline. As I have said before football success comes in cycles Manure will not be able to replace the likes of Keane, Giggs, scholes etc,no matter how much cash they spend, how can you? It's like how were we supposed to replace the late 80's team at Liverpool, IMO its inevitable than they will fall over the next few seasons and I believe the reason Fergie stayed on was because he knew the legacy he would leave behind would be insufficient to keep them at the top. The season they won the euro trophy they played , and I hate to admit it, unbelievable football which they have never been able to reproduce. They won the title last season due to French arrogance. One of the biggest aspects of domination is having a head start over your rivals even before you take to the pitch. United used to have it but no longer, teams now fancy having a go at them. Look how much effect the lack of fear at Anfield has had on us as supporters and the team, management etc. Arsenal are the only team now which strike that fear into their opponents but thier supremacy is shaky if/when Viera goes a snowball effect will see Wenger , Henry et all go. With their rocky foundations and Manures decline I sincerley believe a place at the very top will soon have our name on it. Obviously I have neglected Chelski but who knows where they will be in the near future. Abramovich is being investigated by the Russian authorities and a guy richer than him has already been put on trial. The Russian economy is falling apart and their main revenue is oil. I have studied Russia and it would not surprise me if the arrest Abramovich and froze his assests, there is question marks over his aquasition of sigfnet and its subsequent dealings with the government. Putin is making examples of the Oligarchs in order to maintain his own position. This is part of the reason why he moved to London and invetsed there. If this thing blows up like it might well do our own Government will have to get involved and when that happens its bye bye.
Keep the faith we are on the right track.
