As denials go, it wasn’t the most convincing. Nor is the fact that Liverpool have this summer been rumoured to be looking at a number of players from the Serie A – Vincenco Iaquinta, Amauri, Mancini, Giorgio Chiellini - entirely spurious. Mauro Pederzoli, it has emerged, has been a close friend of Rafael Benitez for almost ten years and the former general director at Brescia and Cagliari has been working very closely to identify potential signings from Italy. Vargas has been one of those who have impressed, with the left back who can also play as a winger excelling in a Catania side that struggled against relegation. Ultimately, however, whether Liverpool do make a move for Vargas depends on what comes of their bid to sign Florent Malouda.

Rafa Benitez is hoping to make his summer spending a family affair. The Liverpool manager wants to bring in Argentine striker Diego Milito after trailing his brother Gabriel all year, claims the Daily Mirror.

Both are Argentine internationals and both play for Real Zaragoza in Spain. But it is Diego - 28 today - who is the surprise target after scouts watching his brother sent back rave reports.

Benitez had a strong presence at the Zaragoza-Real Madrid game at the weekend, where Diego scored twice.

Milito would cost perhaps only a third of the fee Barcelona would demand for Samuel Eto'o and at at around £12m he has the pedigree to solve Liverpool's striking problems.

His younger brother Gabriel, 26, a regular centre-half for Argentina, would cost less and Benitez sees him as providing the experience his defence lacks.
