As denials go, it wasn’t the most convincing. Eager to show, or at least appear as such, that he’s willing to hang on to hang on to Juan Manuel Vargas, Catania president Antonino Pulvirenti was moved into stating that “he’s very happy at Catania but the possibility of playing for a big club can change a player’s opinion. I’ve had enquiries from Juventus and Liverpool.” Which, in other words, means “if a big enough offer comes in he’ll be on his way.” For the more cynical, this could be even be construed as an attempt by Pulvirenti to force AS Roma – who have apparently already registered their interest – into raising their bid. But his mention of Liverpool’s interest isn’t wholly fictitious for they have indeed been watching the player. Nor is the fact that Liverpool have this summer been rumoured to be looking at a number of players from the Serie A – Vincenco Iaquinta, Amauri, Mancini, Giorgio Chiellini - entirely spurious. Mauro Pederzoli, it has emerged, has been a close friend of Rafael Benitez for almost ten years and the former general director at Brescia and Cagliari has been working very closely to identify potential signings from Italy. Vargas has been one of those who have impressed, with the left back who can also play as a winger excelling in a Catania side that struggled against relegation. Ultimately, however, whether Liverpool do make a move for Vargas depends on what comes of their bid to sign Florent Malouda.
