Michael owen - We need him and he needs us

It is all about value for money for me.

Taking his injury record to one side for a moment...he is now fully fit, and presuming his run of bad luck is behind him...

For £9m he would be a good buy, when you compare that to Andy Johnson for a similar fee, Bent at silly money (£12m) and even Nugent at Preston being touted around at £9m+.

He's proved nothing, where at least MO has been there and done it at every level.

It would be good business to buy him at less than £10m IMO.  If for no other reason that to stop Manure getting him, and watch him bang in 25 goals next season for them.

We have a big budget this summer (if the rumours are true) so I think a £10m spend on Owen would be worth while especially as we will recoup most of that by selling either Bellamy or Cisse.

He is less of a risk than any Spanish striker, and we wouldn't have to wait two seasons for him to settle in like we may have to with Torres or Villa (but we could still buy on of those too).

He is a predator and that is exactly what we need.

How many games this season did we dominate and not win??  Too many!

Spot on . His departure was a combination of mismanagement at LFC and the players own ambitions.

Parry and Houllier should have never let him stall for the last 12-18months of his time at Liverpool and as a result Benitez had to sell for a paltry fee rather than risk MO going on a free.

However and theres always a however in these kind of things, LFC very nearly made the same mistake with Stevie G post Istanbul with their apparrent slowness in bringing Stevie to the contract table. Gerrard misinterpreted this as not being wanted or valued by the club and only the intervention of his Dad saved him from going to Chelsea.

I think MO got caught in the cogs of LFC business dealings and their apparrent slowness in getting the business end of affairs done. Some might argue that Michael used this to his advantage but whatever the case it was HIS goals in 2004 that ewnabled us to finish the season and qualify for the CL and the rest is as they say, history.

I've got to say personally I am undecided but I wouldn't shed any tears if he came back or not. I suppose like a lot of LFC fans I am quite indifferent to MO these days which is a surprise in itself.

There are a lot of IFS and BUTS in the MO story but isn't that always the case when we buy any player ?

Walk on .........

I can understand why some would want him back.
I'm just not one of them.
He wanted to leave which is obvious since he didn't want to sign a new contract. He let it run out and forced us to sell him.
He never gave Rafa a chance even though I'm sure Rafa wanted Owen to stay that summer.
All that has happened after that is poetic justice and to leave Liverpool football club in an hour of need just don't sit well with me.

And to buy him back for more than we sold him for would make us look like *****. And when did Owen get 20+ goals in the PL?
He may be a pretty good striker if injury free but he has shown he has very little over for the club who helped him become who he is today.

Walk on, walk on alone in the dark Owen...

They came in with a big offer that we could not match, we told Owen this, but instead of leaning on Real, he took the money which is a lot of fuc.king money.

If I had paid £16m and paid Owen £120,000 a week for the best part of 2 years with only a handful of games in return I'd expect a bit of loyalty.

I agree totally he could've forced Reals hand in saying he didn't want to go to Newcastle then they probably would've accepted our offer for him because they obviously wanted to get shot of him and he them!
As for his ability, yes it is proven. However his ability to miss large parts of the season seems a better proven stat to me in the last fe seasons too!

Bring Owen home, pleads Gerrard
By Henry Winter
Last Updated: 3:48am BST 29/05/2007

Liverpool's two most important players, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, have asked the club's American owners to bring Michael Owen back to Anfield. George Gillett and Tom Hicks are keen but Rafa Benitez, the Liverpool manager, is less enthusiastic and any deal is unlikely.

Gerrard, Carragher and Owen trained together at London Colney yesterday as England began preparing for Friday's prestige friendly with Brazil at Wembley and next week's vital Euro 2008 qualifier in Estonia. As is the way with England, there will be plenty of discussion amongst the players of future plans and hopes. Many a move has been mooted in England hotels.

Home favourite: Liverpool players would like a reunion
The desire of Gerrard and Carragher to restore Owen to the Liverpool fold is hardly a secret. Both have talked openly about their admiration for Owen. All three came through the Academy ranks and remain good mates, despite Owen having left Anfield for Real Madrid and now Newcastle United.

This is more than friends wanting to be re-united. Owen is the type of serial finisher Liverpool are crying out for; their lack of a cutting edge was highlighted during last week's European Cup final defeat to AC Milan.

After the game, Benitez confirmed that he would be investing heavily in rebuilding the side, but Owen is not high on his shopping list. Benitez is more interested in Valencia's David Villa.

Most managers of elite clubs are searching for Didier Drogba clones: strong, muscular forwards who can fill the demanding, multi-faceted role of the lone target-man required by increasingly prevalent 4-5-1 tactics. Owen, small of frame despite his recent time in the gym, is ill-suited to holding the ball up and bringing midfielders in to play.

Owen is most dangerous when deployed alongside another striker, and particularly when chasing balls played over the top. A classic 'run-through' striker, Owen is a predator with pace, not an old-style No 9 or new-school Drogba who leads the line.

For all the dressing-room lobbying at Anfield, it would be a surprise to see Owen back in the famous red of Liverpool, despite the inviting £9m get-out clause in his Newcastle contract. He has been linked with Manchester United but many people in a sport that hardly prizes loyalty still believe Owen owes Newcastle one season.

Judging by his ability, yes, maybe i would agree with the idea of owen returning to Anfield. However, it looks like Owen is kinda injury prone now and i dont think we can afford to sign an injury prone striker to challenge for the premiership. Secondly, we all know Omen's admiration of the national squad and would do anything just to be in England's team. Well that maybe a negative aspect for Liverpool because he already gave his heart to England and i just don't think he can give 110% effort or loyalty to Liverpool like Carra or Gerrard did. Anyway, if Rafa decides to bring him home, then so be it.

Now that Gerard and Carra pleaded openly for Owen's return, will Rafa review his strikers' wish-list for next season ??
Yet to see how things will developed into, perhaps after friday's friendly? ... interesting.

name another young(ish) yet experienced striker who averages more than a goal in two games in the premiership (not some foreign league like Cisse and Morientes) and might come to Liverpool for a reasonable price.

Unless you can, then Owen must come back.

Tend to agree with you Niall. The big unknown for me is that he's lost virtually two whole seasons - that can either be a plus, in that he's not fully two years older playing wise, or it could mean that he's lost the sharpness, mental and physical.

But the bottom line for me is that he wants to come back, and he's learnt his lesson. He knows that we represent his only real chance now of winning anything (I think the Manure link is a smokescreen from Fergie), and for a player of his talent he has underachieved.

When the clubs who own the likes of Villa, Eto'o and Bent see us coming, they are gonna be inflating the price of those players into real gamble territory. With Owen's £9m clause at NUFC, he is the biggest bargain in football.

he was okay if not good for a player back from injury...
still dont get it... look at our forwards situation... he would be a brilliant signing !
if we are to sign 2 strikers...id love for him t be one of the 2...
of all the strikers we'v been linked to... him, villa and etoo are the ones id like to see the most... perhaps one of etoo-villa and owen... from what iv heard he can leave for no more than 10mill... would be the best buy we'v made in a long time if it happens !
cant understand how rafa supposedly doesnt want him back...all the 'he snubbed us last year' craap just doesnt make sense !
