It's obvious that when you play Kewell after a season stopped instead of Gonzalez, that means Rafa doesn't rely on Gonzalez any more.

So the best of lucks to him, I'll see around him next year.

I like his attitude but hes not good enough. Time to bite the bullet and ship out the :censored:. If we want to challange properly next year Rafa needs to be ruthless. Now is the time to step up and make a go of it.

Just what happened here?  All the hard work in signing the boy and Rafa waxing lyrical over him yet he never really played.  I would play him over Zenden any day.

it's a shame after all the build and problems in getting him- nice to see rafa isn't messing around with sentiments and is getting rid! If this is true then we definitely know he's looking to stregthen the wing (no big surprise though)

also- does anyones head hurt as much as mine this morning?!!

Zenden is out the door as well

Rafa Benitez is wasting no time reflecting on Liverpool's UEFA Champions League final defeat, as he has confirmed there will be a number of changes at Anfield this summer.

The Spanish tactician is planning an overhaul of his squad and he has confirmed Dutchman Boudewijn Zenden will be allowed to talk to other clubs, while Mark Gonzalez is on the brink of a move away from Merseyside.

Benitez has already shown the door to Robbie Fowler and Jerzy Dudek and he is intent on bringing in his targets as soon as possible.

"We must not waste this moment," said Benitez. "We must move quickly to sign our number one targets.

"If we wait we will be chasing the players who are second and third on our list. We need to change the structure of the club on and off the pitch.

"We must make progress, and make it now to take us up two or three levels straight away.

"There will be several players leaving," he added, with Gonzalez tipped to join Real Betis. "We will wait for offers.

"We have a deal nearly completed for Gonzalez and I have told Bolo that he can talk to other clubs. We know the situation we have now."

Benitez is convinced he will have the backing of owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

"I have been told by the new owners that they will back my plans," he said. "But when you look at the champions Manchester United spending £20million on a midfield player, and we have been paying just £8 to £9m for our strikers, you know what must be done.

"We must spend big and spend now. Our fans know what we need to do and so do I. We need to pay the price needed for each position."

Thats a good sign.  Hopefully this means paying the going rate and not trying to steal players on the cheap.

I can't help but thinking this is a premature exit....Who's to say it wasn't first-season syndrome ? Who's to say he couldn't turn it round next year ?
Zenden - yes, let him off.
But Gonzales, I'm unsure of....I've said before he should he given until the January transfer window, and I stand by that...

Offical Home Page

First to say, glad he's gone. I know some will say he didn't get enough game time but he was not suited to this league. Far too easy to push off the ball and never looked to knuckle down and get into the game. Rafa's insistence on playing him at the start of the season had a deterimental effect on the entire team and we had no balance and were all over the place.

Won't be missed.
