Hands up, with some of the threads on war and terroism and I myself included. We all seem to have a dig at the good old U.S of A from one time to another. Whether it be about their single minded outlook on the world today, or the fact they, from time to time think the world ends at their borders and like to have their fingers in most of the pies globally.

It seems fashionable to run them down when talking of the "weopans of mass destruction" debacle. Or anything of similar substance, I feel most people run them down to give some sort of balance when pointing the finger at extremists for their part in the "war on terror".

But lets be honest here, who would you rather back you in any kind of war or political breakdown in future politics or even war itself. Not the French, no, not the Germans, no, Spanish, Italians........ who?
The Americans are like a big brother and we may not always agree with what they do, but like a brother we'll back them up. Which is a whole lot more we can say about them than our European neighbours who usually bury their head in the sand at any kind of trouble. Generally the Americans will do the same and back us, same with Australia.

Put it this way if I had to choose who I'd rather be stuck in the trenches with out of an American and a Frenchman you can bet your bottom dollar I'd go with the Yank. Way before the French surrended Paris to the Nazis during WW2 and the Yanks where offically involved in the war, they were suppliing the British with warships on a continuous production line. Their there when the can be counted upon, and in times of all this Muslim extremist terroism s.hit. I for one would stand side by side with the Yanks and fight these extremist b@stards, than sit around a table with or European neighbours and talk  diplomacy and stand in the face of terror while these extremists do as the please.

The british government will make it's final annual payment (£45.5 million) on the "loans" given by America during WW2  at the end of this year.

A small price to pay (especially if you take modern day football into consideration) at falling at the hands of Nazis Germany.

Bright side of America?

They kicked out Nazi's asses

The NASA, which doesn't seem to be racing with other countries but collaborating with the ESA, and seems to be ruled by decent people

Some of the stuff they do, like the CocaCola (Coke)

Some of their bands, Like Weezer and The Doors

Great personalities like Noam Chomski or Marthin Luther King...

A huge country, with huge successes and huge mistakes.

In fairness, the French have always got bad press. The French didn't meekly surrender in 1940: they had no choice but to, as they were solidly defeated militarily in the field, just as their British allies were in the same summer, Dunkirk was a catastropic military disaster.

And as for Frenchmen in trenches, they died in their hundreds of thousands in the Great War.
