Liverpool and England footballer Steven Gerrard is to follow Lord Harold Wilson and become an Honorary Freeman of the borough of Knowsley.
The midfielder, who was brought up in Huyton, is to be given the honour for his outstanding contribution to national and international football.

Members of Knowsley Borough Council voted unanimously to give him the honour at a meeting on Wednesday.

It will be the first time the honour has been bestowed since 1988.

Gerrard was born in Whiston and grew up on the Bluebell estate in Huyton, went to St Michael's School in Rupert Road (now Huyton with Roby Primary).

"Phenomenal success"

He was spotted by Liverpool FC scouts aged nine while playing for Whiston Juniors.

Cllr Round said: "Steven is an exceptional talent and a real ambassador for the borough of Knowsley.

"Despite his phenomenal success on the pitch he is still a Huyton boy at heart and is the first to acknowledge the influence of his roots.

"He's thoroughly deserving of this honour."

The 26-year-old captained Liverpool to win their fifth European Cup triumph against AC Milan in Istanbul in 2005.

If you are a freeman of an area, you can do most things without getting arrested. That means he can go and dig the pitch up at the new tescos arena.

oh shush about media hype again. where doesnt he get recognition? You expect someone to get knighted or a obe cbe whatever at his early stage of his career?

Well done on him for getting it but to say the media doesnt give him any credit is just... an embaressment

Everyone in the country/europe/the footballing world knows that Gerrard is one of the worlds best midfielders.

No!!! But where was Bobs MBE for winning 3 European Cups,when Fergie got it for one, and the entire Man utd team got some sort of honour for winning the European cup in 1999. Where was ours?!?!

Liverpool don't get honours because were from Liverpool, We are not a self pity city but the facts are there.

Its you and your almighty 'at least liverpool like us'

Its getting boring. Everyong knows hes doing a good job, and he will get the recognition, when hes earned it more.

That was the line that annoyed me, thats all. Cant we just have some news that is good and not anti southern - anti media - anti everything. Id just like to see a post one day that isnt a moan

I said nothing about media recognition, I just mentioned the queen, I was not anit-media or anti southern!!

Maybe I was anti-queen, but you made a mountain out of a molehill. I said "unlike the Queen", how that can be used to be " anti Southern" or "anti media" I don't know, will you please explain?

I meant it as in " Just media bullshit" - As it doesnt mean anything really, as he is not gonna go round, causing mayhem because he can.

I meant it to be worthless just something to promote the council etc.

rafa mate, i think its you thats a bit confused about the honours.

Paisley has an OBE, ferguson was knighted which is a much higher honour (he became a Sir)
