I don't have an answer in Mark Gonzalez case, but I think that for brazilians using the whole name is important. Meaning that I don't think he likes calling him "Aurelio", I've seen a couple of Brazilians insisting on this, his name is Fabio Aurelio and he wouldn't like missing it.

In the case of Gonzalez it just may be personal pride. Gonzalez is like Murphy or Smith, too popular, and people with those surnames often put something else in their shirts, as there are zillions of Gonzalez. For instance Raul, from Real Madrid is Gonzalez, but as that's so "common" he uses just Raul.

I'm not too sure about Gonzalez case, but I'm pretty sure about Fabio Aurelio, just a cultural difference on the importance of initial and middle names. In latin countries if your name has two parts, you use them all. You though, seem to give more importance to one of them, I remember it was for instance "John William Aldridge" but he just used "John Aldridge"

when my son was learning to read, his name card in school had an apple on it.After a while the apple was removed as he started to recognise his name.
Now an apple there shirts would look plain silly  but maybe they need a bit of help with their reading. :D
You don't appreciate a lot of stuff in school until you get older.

most english have a middle name sabre but we generally just use our first name.

to be honest mate i havent seen brazilians using their initial before although most brazilians seem to just have one name (well name shortened to the nick name)

pretty sure carlos has r. carlos and Fabio Junior has F.Junior.

Brazilians have nicknames, like Ronaldinho real name has like 6 parts so for short he has ronaldinho, no doubt aurelios real name is massive so has fabio aurelio.

Here look at Dinho and Carlos shirts:

Actually rafadodd, Ronaldinho's name is actually Ronaldo but in the national team because Luis Ronaldo (real madrid) was already there, they gave him the name Ronaldinho (little Ronaldo).

Well as the discussion was about shirt names, and why certain players have initials and as you pointed out the story behind Ronaldinho’s name, I was hoping you would have realised Luis Garcia has he’s full name on he’s shirt.

But I wasn’t sure if this was he’s full name? I was hoping some one of your intelligence could have helped me out.

Luis Garcia isn't his full name. I think his name is Javier Luis garcia. Luis Garcia being the surname.

Garcia is the surname. It's another super common surname, I think the most common of all he surnames, IIRC. Luis is a name.
