Charlton capture Carson
By Peter ORourke -  Created on 14 Aug 2006

Charlton have moved to solve their goalkeeping problems by snapping up Liverpool's Scott Carson.

Carson has agreed a season long loan deal with Charlton after agreeing terms and passing a medical.

Charlton moved for Carson after seeing their move for Norwich's Robert Green hijacked by West Ham.

Green looks set to move to Upton Park after West Ham agreed an undisclosed fee with Norwich for his signature.

Carson is well down the pecking order at Liverpool with Jose Reina and Jerzy Dudek ahead of him in Rafa Benitez's plans.

The former Leeds youngster spent three months on loan at Sheffield Wednesday last season and won a call-up to the England squad for the World Cup.

Liverpool are willing to loan him out so that he can gain valuable first team experience and Carson will hoping that by playing regularly at Charlton he can win his place back in the England set-up.

Oh well, that isn't too bad of a news really. He is a decent young keeper with lots of potential and should be getting experience elsewhere. I don't see him getting any first team opportunities with Reina being such a consistent goalkeeper for us. But surely we have to assume that Dudek would be staying with us or else we won't have a 2nd keeper with adequate experience?

Since Carson has gone out on loan, then Jerzy has to stay.  There's no way that Rafa would let Dudek go now.  He should stay for one more year and then next year when we get Carson back, we would probably consider moving Jerzy.

Should be good for him getting some first team experience. When he comes back he should be the no. 2 choice goalkeeper, surely?

Not convinced by Carson myself, i think that he is prone to too many mistakes, i could be wrong but from what i have seen i dont think he has what it takes to be our number 1.
The experience will be good for him and i hope he proves me wrong.

The experiance will do him good

Rafa has to keep Dudek now though, or that would just be silly

If Reina got injured and Jerzy had gone we'd be in a right mess

I wasn’t convinced that Carson was ready to be back up to Reina this season, I was expecting him to get first team football at a Championship side and come back to displace Dudek as back up to Reina. But this move is great if he plays first team football, young keepers need games and loads of them, and the higher the pressure situation the better. Playing a season of first team football for Charlton would be absolutely great for Carson. I personally believe that 2 years of first team football in the Premiership will be the making of Kirkland, keepers like them need to be exposed to high level football where the pressure is intense and every move is scrutinised, great move for Carson if he plays first team football.

And our goal keeping situation looks rosy, Reina, Dudek and Martin.

Personally this is the ideal situation I wanted at the end of last year, Reina as our number 1, Dudek as back up and Martin as 3rd choice, with Carson getting first team football out on loan, and it being in the Premiership is a huge bonus.

For a goalkeeper it is way too early to say whether Carson is going to be good enough for LFC at the moment. Carson is still only 20 years old and when you see some keepers still going at 39/40 years old then he still has a long way to go before he reaches his peak at around 30 years old. From what I've seen in the past couple of years he has got talent and by getting more experience out on laon then I do think he will be mature enough when a chance does come his way in the 1st 11 to take it.

Of course he was prone to mistakes he is young after all. But I though against Juve apart from his clangger he did show some promising signs.

Lets hope he stays interested in us and does not run out of patience.

Spot on.  And, you can bet Carson will be "exposed" plenty with Traore playing in front of him at Charlton!  :D

As i said i'd be happy to be proved wrong, to have an english no2 goalkeeper would please me.
He does look like a good shotstopper but the game you highlighted was a vital Champions league match that mistake could of been really costly.
As most have said the experience will do him good and then would be a better time to judge him.

Yes, we can recall Carson or Krikland who are both on Loan. They are both potentially good keepers but who knows. I think Kirkland is the better keeper but there is literally no part of that man that hasn't been injured so I doubt whether he will ever return to LFC. As for Carson, I am not sure about him at all. I have this thing about Goalkeepers who have that look of fear like an animal in the headlights. Carson just doesn't look that confident or calm. Reina, Cech and Van Der Sar, look very comfortable in the nets and they look like they are bossing the area. Carson just looks confused at times and I have seen him drop some clangers. Still, he is very young for a keeper and he might rise to be amazing by the time he is 25. Kirkland too if he can keep his body parts injury free.

scott seems to be doing really well down at the valley: its reassuring to see his confidence grow. despite the doubters, i for one reckon he is No1 material...one day.
