Scott carson - what should we do with him

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Ian Rush's Right foot » Wed Jun 20, 2007 10:26 pm

After watching him tonight play for the under 21's it got me seriously thinking.

What should we do with him?

I honestly think Reina and him are the 2nd and 3rd best keepers in the prem (respectivly)

But he obviously wants 1st Team Football, and i'd hate to have to sell him.

He's contracted till 2011 so maybe we loan him out to a bottom half team.

I'd actually like to see him play for us

It's a real toughie as i think potentially he will be better than Reina.

What are your thoughts?

If he's happy being number 2 then I'd keep him cos he's not gonna budge Pepe, I think he wants to be a number 1 keeps so I can see him moving on if someone in the prem comes in for him.

I think we should sell him. We could probably get around 3-4 million for him..

Let's face it, he won't be happy being back-up. So we minus well sell him for a nice profit, and then try to bring in an older and fairly reliable keeper on the cheap to replace him.

Also I would definitely try and work a buy-back or first option clause in any deal for him, if we were to sell him..

I would obviously love to keep him, But he needs/wants first team football. He would be great back up to Pepe but hes just not going to want to sit on the bench 95% of the season. I think he will be loaned out again, Get some experience which is what he will need.

no good replacements currently and i thought the whole point of challenging for the premiership is that we have world class back up every where on the pitch

if thats the case then it seems important that we keep him and tell him that his loyalty will eventually be rewarded, which it will inevitably...unless reina is invincible

I agree that he does have fantastic potential and did do a fabulous job for Charlton as they would've been down alot earlier had it not been for his performances. Having said that he never seemed to make me confident when he played a handful of games(that many?) for the senior squad and I feel that also had an effect on the back four. But he's young and can get better I feel. I'd like him to stay and take his opportunity should it come his way. At the moment Reina I feel is the best we have and we need young hungry quality backup not some has been over the hill keeper just here for the sake of it. Will he be prepared for this I don't know?

I don't think he's got a snowball's chance in hell of supplanting Reina--who's still young and is only getting stronger--in the short to medium term.  So, I'd loan him out for one more season and see what happens.  If Reina gets injured, we can always call him back from loan.  If, while on loan, his stock continues to rise, we'll make a handsome sum on him in a year's time.  If he plateaus we can keep him as back-up.

BTW, I have this sneaking suspicion that Spurs will be in for him a year from now.  They seem to buy up as much young English talent as they can and they must surely see that Robinson's overrated and potentially a week link if they hope to kick on in Europe and in the league.  You heard it here first! :nod

He isn't going to oust Reina, and he is too good to sit on the bench, if he stays, we have the best 1-2 goalie option in the country, if we loan him out to a mid table club, he will probably shine even more and either A. up the asking price or B. be taken into consideration for the starters job. If we sell him now, bad move on Liverpool's part.

yer sounds the most sensible way to go..... dont want manure or any other of our main rivals picking him up down the track....

he is still soooo young in the overall scheme of things.... keepers can have such long careers...

we need to have the old successful liverpool system in place and keeping carson would make this is a good start...

when its time to rebuild a new team and weve already got quality like pepe here for sometime.... when the time does come though we need to have quality replacing quality....

Carson is a quality home grown keeper who we should not be flogging because he can't dislodge Reina - his time will come. I do think that it is worth loaning him out again, as last season showed that playing for even a relegated team has kept him sharp and improving.

i dont think that danish youngster is ready is he....

I think that loaning him out would probably be the best option for all and obviously recall him should anything happen to Pepe, but having said that Rafa likes to change keepers for the Carling cup so whos gonna step in for Pepe? Someone with a bit of Quality about them?

I actually dont think he is anything special.
Against Italy he got beat with one from about 25 yards that went about 3 yards inside the post....before it went in the italians were taking potshots from everywhere so he should have expected it-even if he was slightly unsighted.
He is prone to mistakes, and before someone says it...i know all keepers are, but i have already seen loads from Carson.

Marwood jinxed him last night before the penalty shoot out, as did Peter Taylor. Saying he was a penalty expert and that he would take England through.
He was dog poo in the pens and dived before the dutch players kicked virtually every time, nothing like Pepe-who waits until the very last minute, making the taker have to actually choose a corner and be precise.

If someone offers 3-4 million i would take it, if not we might as well loan him out for another season, and just look at getting an experienced no2 in incase of any injuries to Reina, like with did with Paul Jones a few years ago.
