I think the back five picks itself with the only questions being :

- Who partners Bellamy up front? Have to go with Fowler myself, more goal threat
- Who plays on the left? I think Kewell did enough last season but Gonzalez and he could rotate
- Who plays on the right? I'd avoid playing Gerrard there although he is capable, problem is fitting Alonso, Gerrard AND Sissoko into the same midfield.

Other than that most XIs would be built around Reina, Riise, Hyypia, Carra, Finnan and Bellamy

Firstly, Crouch will be picked over Bellamy and Fowler every time. Although Bellamy has more goal threat Crouch is integrale to any title challenge this season. Fowler will be used less than both Crouch and Bellamy for starting XIs, and the Fowler/Bellamy partnership even less.

Secondly in my opinion most XIs would be built around Reina, Carragher, Gerrard and Alonso. Riise, Hyypia, Finnan and Bellamy will be rotated at some point.

Have to agree.

We have the best right midfielder in the premiership already in Gerrard. Player of the year and over 20 goals playing there along with plenty of assists suggests that's his best position. Alonso plays better when Gerrard is not in the centre with him imo and therefore we get the best out of both of them by having Gerrard on the right. Sissoko is crucial, especially away from home. But with injuries, suspensions and the occasional loss of form, Pennant was still a signing we really needed to make and he will be important.

I'm glad a few people also think Gerrard's best position is on the right, Gerrard himself may not know it but it is

Alonso and Sissoko is one of the best centre midfield partnerships in Europe and neither of them can be dropped. It was no coincidence that our form dropped and we went out of the Champions League when Sissoko got injured last season, he is a key player.

I notice virtually everyone has gone for Gonzalez at left mid , is he that good that he automatically gets the nod ahead of a fit Harry Kewell or even Zenden and Riise ? (asking the question as I haven't seen much of him ).

Good question regarding Gonzalez. I don't think he'll have a fantastic season, he may need some time before he settles in. Zenden imo isn't the solution on the left, he's lost the pace he once has when he was younger and he doesn't have that trickery about him. He's much better in the center where he's played in the past couple of seasons.

Riise, he's solid enough as a left-back but not good enough to be a left winger week in and week out. He's too limited as a footballer.
