Ace Ventura wrote:Obviously to pick a starting eleven with a squad like ours is really difficult, it all depends on who we are playing, but for arguments sake if it was just pick your best team, mine would be...........

                        Reina

Finnan        Carragher  Hyypia       Riise

Gerrard        Alonso    Sissoko      Gonzalez

                  Bellamy   Crouch

Subs : Dudek Palletta Pennant Garcia Fowler

Admittedly i havent seen enough of Gonzalez but with Harry being injured i think that Mark has an oppurtunity to make that position his own.
If we were chasing a goal that team could easily be changed, with the likes of Fowler Pennant and Garcia fantastic options.
It shows how much strengh in depth there is when the likes of Aurellio Agger and Kewell cant even make the bench, Aurellio could be far better than i am aware and is obviously going to provide plenty of competition with Riise for left back, while also both can cover left midfield, as i said early...so many options, Rafa must be eagerly awaiting the start of this season.

I think there'll be a lot of squad rotation this year by Benitez, but I think your starting 11 there is the one we should start the season with.

I agree with keeping Gerrard on the right.  You can't argue with his record last season when he played there regularly.  He, Sissoko and Alonso are all undroppable for me (in the big games anyway).  If any are unavailable or need rested, then play 2 of them in the centre with Pennant coming in on the right.

I also think Aurelio could emerge as 1st choice LB, but doubt he'll start the season there ahead of Riise.  I can see him maybe playing left mid early in the season to ease him into the premiership, maybe in away games where he'd be more defensively minded than Gonzalez.

Crouch will play most games out of our current forwards I think.  But he and Bellamy are likely to be the preferred partnership for the big games.  Fowler could yet have a big role to play too.

Palleta and Agger I can't see featuring too much again this year.  Sami is still the best imo and Benitez doesn't like tinkering with the back 4 too much.  People moan about his lack of pace, but Agger and Palleta are hardly like lightening either and Sami has the experience so still gets the nod.

Garcia does seem to be the red herring at the moment.  But he's great to have in the squad as he's versatile and can change games coming from the bench.

If Kuyt or another forward signs then Benitez is going to have plenty of selection headaches next season - but it's good for us!  Definitely some squad trimming is needed though.  I'd get rid of Traore, Diao (obviously), Pongolle, Mellor and Dudek.  If we got a good offer for Warnock or even Kewell now I'd also consider it, but if we could keep them happy as squad players I'd ideally keep them.  I'd also keep Zenden - good cover, versatile and he's looked really sharp in pre-season, looks hungry for games.

I suppose, if pressed to play Rafa for a day, I'd go with this for 4-4-2:

                               Reina

Finnan        Carragher         Hyypia           Riise

Gerrard       Alonso             Sissoko          Gonzales

                                     Fowler
                           Bellamy

Subs: Carson, Crouch, Pennant, Garcia, Agger

i like bad bob's team
we've only won it 5 times

I'm going for 3-5-2. I'd like to see us attack a bit more.

Reina
Carra
Ageer
Hyypia (sweeper because of his lack of pace)
Pennant
Gerrard ©
Alonso
Sissoko
Gonzalez
Bellamy
Fowler.

Subs: Carson, Finnan, Riise, Garcia and Crouch.

No spae for Aurellio, Zenden, Kewell or Paletta who are all practically new signings after last year. I know Zenden and Kewell aren't but Zenden was out for the majority of the season and impressed when he did play and Kewell looked like the player we all know he can be, but neither get on my bench I'm afraid.

How can you include Pennant if you haven't seen enough of Bellamy. Surely you going to see more of Bellamy, either internationally or for Newcastle when they were in Europe.

:oh:

I am no expert on a 3 at the back formation but isn't the norm to have 3 centre backs with very athletic wing players to run up and down the wing all the game with almost a 5 man defence when defending?

I would like to be seeing more of this formation as we played well with it last season in the one game where we used it

The 3-5-2 worked well against Newcaslte last year. Ste Warnock and Steve Finnan were in the box at all times. We were playing really well that day and I for one would like to see us put it into practice a little bit more.

Think of it like seeing Pennant and Gonzo screaming back at full pace to make it into a 5-3-3 in defence. Gonzo and Pennant are very fit and quick, don't discount them!

With Alonso and Sissoko ahead of our main 3 the defence looks pretty tight.

---------------------------Reina------------------------------------
---Finnan(kromkamp)---Carra(Hyppia/Paletta)--Risse(warnock/aurelio)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------Sissoko-------------------------------------
Pennant(Garcia)-Gerrard--Alonso(Zenden)-Kewell(gonzalez/Aurelio)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------Bellamy(fowler/pongolle/Garcia)----------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------Crouch---------------------------------------

Gonzalez not being first choice is something I am expecting, he seems like he is going to take a bit to adjust to the prem. I expect Crouch to be a target man all season, he owns the position and we have alot of good run on men in Pongolle,Fowler and obviously Bellamy. If we sign a new striker, I would probably re think the formation. I like the idea of three at the back with Sissoko holding it together, Alonso can play the same role and I think if Alonso was stronger and Sissoko picks up his passing range, we would have an extremely solid formation.

I didn't include Kewell because he'll miss the start to the season due to injury. Obviously there's a lot of options for us this time around, and it's hard not to include Sissoko in the line-up. There will be a lot of rotation and the formation will mostly depend on the opponent.
