no offence woolyback but thats just bollox. the british culture is what you make it. There is alot of good with brussels but a lot of bad as well. The main problems we have are things like immigration and how money is spent but its still a pretty damn cool place to live if you ask me.

Would like to see a referendum on the subject and our ultimate departure from the union - although do realise the govt would never permit this as they are too scared of the outcome.

I think our government realised a long time ago what a mistake it was to join and that they had dug themselves in a hole. Nobodys told them yet that when your stuck in a hole the first thing you should do is stop digging. The EU is advantagous to the poor agriculture based countries (coincidentally France) and not so advantagous to finance based or industrial nations.Spain has gained a great deal from joining the EU (Loads of new roads and grants) Britain is becoming the new cash cow of europe as Germany (the old cash cow) has struggled since unification( That man Hoffs fault Dawson) The laws that we are paying them a fortune to make for us are in the main a joke (Shanks make sure the ketchup is not in a tomato shaped dispenser because that would be against EU laws)In Britain we used to pay 5%purchase tax(on certain goods only, classed as luxury items)we now pay 17.5%Vat on virtually everything. It was cheaper having a big Navy!

There are some issues that still needle me, eg certain states (France in particular) choose to completely ignore some EU rulings with impunity when it suits them whilst we Brits are seemingly always bent on playing by the rules . Having said that I think the EU's a good step in the evolution of Europe .Open borders and a single currency within the community are perhaps the most startling and positive consequence of the EU that the average man in the street experiences .I can't wait for the UK to change from Sterling to the Euro , it makes trafficking so much easier .     :D

I think the concept of the EU is good - but the practice leave a lot to desired.  One example is the monthly travel between Brussels to Strasbourg by members of the Parliament at an annual cost of 200 million euros.

WHAT A COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY - just to appease the French!!!!!

Woolie British culture died in the fifties with the advent of American films and American TV. When did you last wear a bowler hat or a flat cap instead of that sexy pink cowboy hat. :D Our culture is all imported from the states. Europe work less hours and have a better lifestyle, USA work long hours and have a poor lifestyle (Who do you think we copied?) We are the 4th most densely populated country on the planet after Bangladesh, Korea and Denmark(not sure about the last one), yet we have no policy on immigration and no limits. British culture is so watered down that it doesnt exist anymore. The only thing we have left is a large number of decent people spoiled by a few toerags.

Im Irish Sabre and not sure if you want my opinion, but i'll give it to you anyway.

Ireland was a part of Britain for eight hundred years. We got nothing out of the deal cos we were a different form of Christianity. They stripped us of our wealth, our culture, our language, our pride. They treated us like scum, and they left us with nothing but bitterness.

We joined the European Union in 1973 and we are now one of the top five richest country on earth.

The EU has been good to Ireland.

I hope we keep the pound, it's part of our identity.

I know it might be easier for those who go abroad if we had the euro, but I think it comes at a price, as does everything.

That's the thing I don't like about the union - it feels like they are taking away each countries identity and trying to make us into one big superstate.
I'm glad if Ireland have benefited from this alliance. But I don't really think we have on the whole.
Do you remember that fruit and veg man who had a market stall and he was "told" by Brussels that he had to stop using pounds and ounces and was taken to court because he refused?
I know change has to happen, but I thought this was a little ironic to say the least!!

So I do hope we keep the pound, but I don't think we'll be able to do it without a fight!
(And that's my opinion, anyways.)

:)

Yeah GreenRed ,all us english lived like kings on the wealth , culture , language and pride we stripped you of . Even when living on bread and drippin' , stuffin' cardboard into my shoes to fill the holes in the soles and sleepin' with overcoats on the bed thru the winter I remember thinkin' thank christ we took all that stuff from the Irish or we'd really be f'ucked .

Back in the 50' I often heard Liverpool referred to as the "capital of Ireland" , every street had Irish people living in it . Two of my aunties married Irish fella's . Cut a scouser deep enough and you'll find some Irish in there .Understand your bitterness but on this site especially I'd appreciate it if us scousers weren't included in your reference to "They" .

I do'nt get your point Woof.

Half the scousers i ever met have Irish background.

The other half are educated enough to know how the English shi.t on the paddys anyway.

I never realised you were a scouser, you never struck me as one.I always thought you was a southerner for some reason.Anyway,no problem.

One thing though, when i mention the English i aint talking about scousers.

Scousers are a whole level above the English.
