Back off brussels? - Or may be not

This is a query so that the british around here give some insight about how you feel about European Union and all that.

I won't enter the discussion, I'd just like to read your thoughts about it. I've spoken and drunk with several english people already but I've learnt that Scousers have their own personality and in many things they are not like the cockneys and think different.

So are you one of those "Back off Brussels" guys, or do you believe in the European Thingy?

I respect much every opinion, but a UE without the full cooperation of U.K. would be pointless IMO.

SOrry, I misclicked but I meant to enter this on general chat!!!!!!!!! mods , please move it.

Without wishing to get into the jingoistic "you would all be speaking French/ German but for us " argument. I was never in favour of joining the EU in the first place. England has historically always considered herself to be seperate from the rest of Europe, and only bothered with Europe if one country or another started to look too much of a threat. We had our Empire later our Commonwealth from which we traded with friends, and got cheap meat, dairy products, fruit and bread etc.
We joined the EU and traded with people who where historically our enemies, and we are then surprised when they rip us off at every opportunity. Most people on here are too young to remember the days when we laughed at the prices the rest of Europe paid for food etc.(before we became rip off Britain)
The Aussies, Canadians ,SouthAfricans etc supplied not only our needs but were never backwards when it came to a war. God help us if we ever needed to ask the French for help. We pay over the odds for virtually everything over here now, while a few fat cats get rich on expenses in Brussels. So my answer would be - No I am not really infavour of the EU, and we could beat the commonwealth teams at football (usually) :D

Well i'm not a european, but i think the European union delivers unity and democracy to the european countries. Also it adds good protection between countries and help if a european union country is in trouble. I wish the middle east had this type of union because it would help alot, especially during conflicting times. They tried it once, in the era of Jamal Abdul Nasser, when he tried to create an arab union, but it failed.

Well it's not xenophobia the way you wish to trade or the prefferences of your diplomatic efforts, it's a sobereign right to choose that. We may think different, but one view hasn't to be better than the other one.

Please continue :) Yeh Dawson, you too. :D

This is most annoying - I just wrote out a whole post and then lost it before I posted as my screen said "error" - have to try and remember what I said.

I agree with Saint, wished we'd never joined the European Union.
Think it's bad that our democratically elected govt aren't being allowed to govern because it's hands are tied by Brussels.
(Even though I don't think that the govt are doing a good job at the moment).

Would like to see a referendum on the subject and our ultimate departure from the union - although do realise the govt would never permit this as they are too scared of the outcome.

BTW I like the other sort of brussels, esp. with a lot of Heinz tomato ketchup   :p

i'm all FOR the EU. for every story the daily mail prints about brussels telling us we've got the wrong shape bananas there will be a million stories of ways we have benefited from being in europe. the city of liverpool has had a lot of funding from europe (it used to have "objective 1" status like the poor parts of portugal, greece etc) so on that count the city has done well although i'm not sure if the city still has it

a lot of the anti-european lobby moan about britain losing it's culture but the last time i stopped and looked at present-day british culture it f*ckin STUNK and i for one would love to see the back of working 50 hours a week then sitting in front of the telly with a takeaway and not seeing your kids monday-friday, then going out on a weekend to get rampant p*ssed and pick a fight with the nearest person i can see. then it's all off back to the barratt home in faceless suburbia to bemoan the fact it cost us £300,000 and read the daily mail again in the morning for a fresh dose of alarmist sh*te about immigration, bird flu and the evils of teenagers

anything that waters down british culture is f*ckin great as far as i'm concerned, and if the EU helps that process along then gimme the EU anyday
b*ll*c*ks and s*i*e
