17 million buy-out clause.  Too much for us at the time.

Don't understand your irrational hate for Duff, Dawson.  I don't think he's particularly bad for diving.  He's a tricky player and draws a lot of fouls, he's nothing like Ronaldo or one of those pr1cks.  As a professional his attitude seems spot on and by all accounts he looks after himself very well off the field too.

Well i'll be keeping fingers crossed this is true and we sign him. He can play left or right and has bags of talent and a professional attitude.

On an interesting sidenote. Something i just thought of. Could this mean the Kewell being transferred rumours might be true and Duff will be his replacement?

I'd prefer to keep Kewell in the squad as well myself tbh.

I have to sgree with dawson on that one.  Even though I am Irish and I think Duff is a class player I would not like to see him in a liverpool shirt.

I just read on Sky text that liverpool are in the hunt for Jermaine Pennant.  Thoughts?

Hes not a decent human being because he dived to get alonso suspended? Ok.. that must be true for every player who has ever dived then, including stevie g. It may have been wrong to do that but to say hes not a decent human being because of it is rather silly

i'd personally prefer shaun wright phillips. as i'm sure most people would.
surely wright-phillips must be out of favour with mourinho if damien duff is, considering duff played more than
wright-phillips last season. ???

Just saw that.

Bad move for him if he goes there, he'll win nothing.

Silly from Newcastle too, they need a couple of strikers and some defenders, but they're blowing most of their budget on a winger?

Very strange move by Newcastle, considering the rapid progress N'Zogbia made last season, and considering that they urgently need 2 strikers and a centre back.

I guess this signing is for the fans more than anything else, does anyone else get the feeling that Roder doesn’t know what he is doing?

it's now on the site

Newcastle have jumped ahead of Liverpool and Tottenham in the pursuit of Damien Duff, and are now on the verge of signing the Chelsea winger.

The Magpies agreed a fee for Duff on Friday, and the former Blackburn player has also concurred on a contract with the club.

The Republic of Ireland international will now undergo a St James' Park medical this weekend, with the signing poised to be sealed early next week.

Duff was one of the first signings of the Roman Abramovich era at Stamford Bridge, joining the side then managed by Claudio Ranieri in the summer of 2003 for a £17 million fee.

However, the writing appeared to have been on the wall for the 26-year-old after he failed to hold down a regular starting place in Jose Mourinho's Premiership-winning side last season.

Tottenham were the first club to test The Blues' resolve to retain Duff, but Newcastle have stolen a march on all suitors and Duff's signing would represent a sizeable coup for Glenn Roeder.

It sounds like another "Forget what we need in the squad lets just sign a big name to keep the fans quiet" on Newcastle's part. What's the point of having a provider when you've got fook all to put it away?? This has got FAT Freddies finger prints all over it.
