May I say a sublime "bump" if I have ever seen one.

Congratulations!

By the way Garcia seems to have returned to his ball wasting ways, however, I think he will play against Benfica and should have a great game.  I'll have a fiver on him scoring!  Odds.. anyone?

your wish is my command  :D  again

Rafa's opinion of Luis (and a side-swipe at Maureen I fancy!):

"You have to accept he is what he is," said Benitez. "I tried to change him, for sure, at Tenerife. But he likes football. He likes to do things on the pitch.

"You can tell other players to pass inside, nice and simple, but he likes to be different. That's good for the supporters to see a player who offers different things.

"He's scored a lot of good goals in the last two seasons. You can see him giving away easy balls sometimes, but also scoring fantastic goals.

"If a player tries to do different things then you need to accept it'll be a risk. I've told him to try and do them as close as he can to the opponents' box. That way it's less dangerous for us and more difficult for the other team to try and stop him. He knows that, but I need to keep reminding him - many times!

"If you analyse his career he's scored in double figures almost every year for each of his clubs. There were 13 goals last season.

"He's always a player from whom you can expect something different. If you're struggling in a game you can either do two things, send your centre back up front as a centre forward or use Luis Garcia between the lines.

"As a manager you need to have players like him. If you need to change the game but only have one type of player then you can't change the game.

"He tries to do very difficult things and he's not afraid to try again if they don't come off. You cannot change your form if you don't try things."

I think that's a fair summary.

Luis is Luis, we know he has major weaknesses in his game, he gives the ball away a lot, he isn’t very good at defending, etc. And this is probably why isn’t first 11 material. But he has huge value to the squad, he has been scoring vital goals since he arrives and is so effective coming off the bench.

In a lot of ways he has had a similar season to Cisse, in that he hasn’t started much, when he does he gets subbed, and he is mostly used from the bench. But do you hear any complaints from him, and look at the impact he has had.

Another thing...

The lad's up to 11 goals this season after scoring 13 last season.  That's 24 goals from midfield, all from open play (no penalties or free kicks)...a rather astounding figure if you ask me.  And what's more astounding is that, as Luke says, his minutes are well down this season.

If he's satisfied coming off the bench a fair bit next season he'll continue to do a job for us.  He may be frustrating a lot of the time but, over the last 2 seasons, his goals have been indispensable!

All hail King Luis!  :buttrock
