Fowler for england - What are the chances

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby GunGod » Mon Apr 17, 2006 6:52 pm

Well, I know its not possible by a long shot and its something thats perhaps not even crossed the the minds of even the most hardened Liverpool fan. This could be a really meaningless thread but just for the fun of it so go easy on me.

We all know Owen, Rooney and Crouch takes up 3 spots of of 5. So there are 2 spots left. Consider this situation:

1: Defoe gets injured and/or
2: Bent gets injured and/or
3: Dean Aston gets injured (I hope its the correct guy Im talking about).

So, these 3 players are almost certainly ahead of Fowler in the pecking order. So if the scenario happens that at least 2 out of 3 of them become unavailable for the World Cup, Fowler might just have a chance to compete for a striker's spot with

1: Heskey
2: Sutton
3: Vasell
4: Nolan (he's probably more of a midfielder than a striker but anyway.)
5: Shearer
6: Andy Cole

If there was one spot left and Fowler has to compete for it with the above 6 strikers, do you think he would get it? I personally think that Sven would opt for Shearer, who would probably reject the call. Then he would go for Nolan, then Vasell.

But if it were down to me I would pick Fowler ahead of Nolan (no big match experience),Vasell (not an out and out poacher), Sutton (can't score in 10 league games until last weekend), Heskey (no need for elaboration), Andy Cole (injured for quite some time, won't be match fit for WC) and deliberate between Shearer and Fowler with the former having an advantage. But he might just reject the call.

Who do you guys think?

* I hope I didn't leave out any deserving mentions on the strikers list.

Im strugling to actully make any sense of that, i honestly dont get what your point is, do you want Fowler to go the world cup so you would like to see other players injured just to see another Liverpool player in the world cup squad, basically your saying is if everyone better than Fowler gets injured will he go the World Cup, i think.

I suppose if every french left back gets injured then Djimi will go, you could say this about anyone who isnt going the world cup.

I just dont see the point in this what so ever.

So , in your private discussions with him ,Sven has confirmed he's taking 5 strikers ? .

Yes/No ?

Without that confirmation everything else is bullsh*t . Which in fairness is on a par with most of your posts .

Have a read of Robbie's Autobiography. He is very critical of Erickson and pretty much slates him. there would have to be a LOT of injuries before he got a look in.

I think teddy sheringham is probably marginally before fowler in the pecking order.

I think Sven will take 4 strikers to the world cup, with Owen, Rooney and Crouch certain to go if they are fit. Currently it seems as thought Defoe and Bent are fighting it out for the final spot, but I think that Sven has already decided that it will be Defoe who goes. Bent is a poor mans Owen, they play in a similar way relying on there exceptional movement, were as Defoe prefers to run at people a lot more and would be a lot more useful coming off the bench, so he will go because he provides a bit of variety.

Beyond this I don’t really see any players who are in serious contention. If Fowler continued scoring in the last 4/5 games then he would have an outside chance if there was some serious injury problems, but even then Sven may prefer to go with some who has been playing regularly all season.

But to be honest, I would prefer if he just relaxed this summer and came prepared for a very rigorous pre-season.

You mean kind of like Owen has?  But then again i also agree with your point about fowler resting this summer would be the best thing

I tipped him to make the World Cup squad before Christmas.

It's not looking particularly likely, but I bet he's not as far away from it as some people suspect, particularly if Owen's recuperation doesn't go as well as expected.

As for your list...

1: Heskey - surely even further down the pecking order than Fowler is.
2: Sutton - ditto. Hasn't looked great since moving back to England.
3: Vassell - an outside bet, but hasn't been great since the new year.
4: Nolan - bizarre call for a striker's spot. He's a outside bet for a midfield berth though.
5: Shearer - retired from international football years back, has had a poor season, and is now injured.
6: Andy Cole - also retired from international football.

Defoe, Rooney and Crouch will go.

And I think Bent should be included as he is a little different from the others. Owen, Rooney and Defoe. Wasted. 3 midgets with similar skills. You need different options and Rooney, Defoe, Bent and Crouch give that.

Fowler isn't even close. Owen should prove his fitness first.

who would leave owen out of the world cup? id hate to see you as england manager. Owens guaranteed to score the goals if hes fully fit or not, its no question about him going, rooneys certain also, then its probably crouch/defoe/bent

Oh and this topics a load of sh.ite i might add
