The fact of the matter Stu is that it is now embarrasing at Anfield. The crowd at anfield has been gradually getting worse for the last few years. This season it has been pathetic. The sad excuse that there must be something to sing about just does not wash with me at all. I personally get behind the lads, each and everyone of them.
I am a season ticket holder, and I travel to most away games (including the theatre of penalties on Saturday) and I have to say I enjoy the away games much more.
The travelling fans always sing, from the first minute to the last, and the atmosphere is superb. There are two problem's with Anfield in my opinion. One is that its been invaded by out of towners. Again woolyback will be slating me soon but I will reiterate the point. The people who I hear around me in the Kop shouting "f##k off Heskey you big jessie", "Get in the f##kin game Murphy you dick head" and "Kewell you f##kin s##t House" are not people with scouse accents. FACT. Scousers have a lot more patience, and do not demand instant action from a sub thrown on with ten minutes to go in a dire game.
Before everyone starts, I am telling you what happens at Anfield through experience. I go the game week in week out and I hear it and see it all the time. I have argued countless times with so called fans who berate players, Smicer, Murphy, Heskey and Kewell are the worst targeted, instead of getting behind the lads. I know that these players in particular do need the arm around the shoulder and encouragement, not slating after the first stray pass or wayward shot.
I am not in any way saying that I have any more right to support Liverpool, or that my opinions are more important than a Liverpool fan from Devon. My point is that I know, through listening to and arguing with people at the game that these people in the whole are not from Liverpool.
Again, I do not tar all non-scousers with the same brush, my mate is from Dublin and comes over a lot to watch and support the boys, and he gives his full backing.
The other problem is that the whole idea of going to the game is seen by too many people as meeting in the pub, few beers, up the ground, few more beers, watch most of the first half then down to the bar after 35-40 mins to get some more beer, then up late for the second half before leaving ten minutes early to beat the rush and get a few more beers in the pub. The idea of going the game is a p#ss up, no longer is it about following the team. This is partly due to the largely mediocre last fifteen years, where the only good thing about going the game has been the booze. Sad but true.
Se will never in my opinion get back to the days of singing Beatles hits on a swaying Kop, the game has moved on since then and become far too commercialised, with prices going thru the roof, but we doo need to be getting behind the boys, thru thick and thin, and showing them how much this all means to us.
YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE
JUSTICE FOR THE 96
