£17million swoop! - Parry,"what money problems"

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Yeah that's right Hawkmoon. What we have to rely on now is players who want to play for Liverpool because it is such a great club steeped in tradition or players who know, if they go to Liverpool, they are at least more guaranteed to have reguklar first team football here rather than Man USA or Chelski.

Those are few and far between!  Money has taken over from tradition.  Players can earn upwards of £100K per week at Chelski, and they can afford to pay those astronomical figures.  FFS they were linked to a £65M bid for Adriano!  Who did we buy - Crouch!
We just can't match that financially based ambition!

Pride is being sold to the highest bidder.

Benitez drops transfer hint    Mon, Oct 31 2005 11:31
Rafael Benitez has indicated he is unlikely to spend big money during the transfer window, but feels he can bring in the right players.
The Reds boss has not spent the multi-millions that Jose Mourinho has had at Chelsea, despite winning the Champions League trophy in his first season at Anfield.

But Benitez is happy with his transfer kitty, but has warned that he is unlikely to spend a massive amount on new players in January as he looks to add a centre-back and a right-sided midfielder.

The manager revealed: "I have confidence in my scouts. If you have more money it will be easier, if you don't have big money, it will be more difficult.

"Before the transfer window, we'll tell the club 'These are the players we want' and then we will see if we have enough money.

He added: "I have an advantage in January that we didn't have last year, we are the Champions League winners. Sometimes, finding hungry players is enough and sometimes you don't need big money to sign the best in the world.

Jermaine Pennant from Brum

Apparently sent home from training yesterday for being intoxicated.

No thanks

Yeah, I'm on for loads more than that!
:D

But, seriously folks, maybe a defender is more of a priority than a right-sided midfielder as we've got Gonzalez coming in the summer.

Personally I believe that if the shape of the team is right, and players aren't playing out of position you'll be successful.  In that case a right-sided midfielder will make more difference to our form.

"For sure" (in Rafa's voice), if we didn't stump up a similar amount for Owen we aren't going to pay that for a defender.  That's the way the market goes.

Very dubious no matter how much I want it to be true. Ledley King and Carragher could make an awesome partnership, both of them are so consistent.

I think if we bid that we can kiss our new right winger goodbye.

I don't necessarily think so. Glenn Johnson from Chelsea converting from full-back would be my first choice, followed by Jermaine Pennant from Brum and Zoltan Gera from West Brom in that order. All would be available (with the possible exception of Pennant) for 5 million or less.

22 Million spent on two players...I really doubt Rafa will do that. He doesn't tend to splash it out when it comes to buying players

Then again, if he prioritizes in those two positions, he might go along with it as we are reasonablly covered in every other spot. My only worry now is actually right back - Finnan is a rock, but if god forbid he gets injured, are we going to use Josemi week in and week out? Or Carra at RB with Traore at centre half???

Rafa is shrewd with his buys, just splashing out like that is highly unlikely - if he does have over the 20mil amount to use, i think at least 3 or 4 players will join - providing he uses the total of 20 million.

Gerrard was truly magnificent when playing against west ham. He created loads of tremendous passes to the front runners and provided massive play ideas. With Gonzalez coming in soon, I reckon that our midfield line are comparable to those of Chelski, Barca, and Milan.
having said that, the only way to improve and balance the team is to solidify the rearguards. We need all the help we can get. I still remember when Abel Xavier filled in the gap couple of seasons ago and indeed he fared brilliantly. We need an iconic rearguard that would make opposing strikers psychologically intimidated (e.g. ayala, cafu, maldini etc.)
I feel Rafa will not be needing any more midfielders if Gerrard stick to the right. Nuff said:p
