Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

This morning on century radio reported on a story that Liverpool were bidding £17 million for Spurs defender Ledley King. The report said that King who has only 12 months left on his current £8000 a week contract wants to live closer to his ex partner so he can see his son on a regular basis. His ex(Sue Jones) who lives in a town between Derby & Leicester has told local papers that Ledley wants to join the european champions. Source, Centry Radio about 7:20am & every half hour since.

Ummmm....tasty! But I don't think Spurs would let him go so easily.

I'd be made up if we got Ledley King. He's just what we want in  central defender to replace Sami.

£8000 per week, seems cheap.

King?  He's young, quick and probably the best defender in the Premiership outside the top 3 clubs.  If we have a chance to sign him we should.

Realistically though I don't believe a word of this story.  Spurs are on the up and he is the club captain, I can't see him leaving.  They will break the bank to make sure he signs a new contract with them.  To be honest I thought he'd already signed a new long term deal with them.

YES.. if that is what you have to pay for top quality we should just pay it.  Too much dilly dallying in the transfer market has meant we have lost out on players that we need.

If Man U or Chelsea need to fill a position they just pay up...  Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney...  We need a young, experienced (British if poss) center back, and one of the best is Ledley King.. I say pay the cash and get the player.  We would then have Carragher and King at the back for about another 5 years... sounds good to me!!!
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

To us, I think he is worth every penny of 17 million and probably quite a lot more. I've said before on here that he is THE central defender that we need. Signing him would completely change the way the team plays, we could overnight defend ten or fifteen yards higher up the pitch, allowing us to compress the game and making it much more difficult for teams like Crystal Palace to overrun us. If I was the manager I would forget about Joaquin or anybody else in terms of "splashing it all on one player", Ledley King is the man for me. Pace, power, strength and attitude rolled into one.
Many people are tipping him to play for England in the World Cup as the holding midfielder. It's certainly a possibility, particularly if Gerrard plays on the right for Liverpool a little more often. In my view Gerrard is a better right-sided midfielder than either Wright-Phillips or Beckham if truth be told and this would solidify the team and provide balance. My suspicion however, is that come the World Cup King will be in the team in his favoured position in the centre of the defence. Ferdinand looks like he's 'gone' to me whereas Campbells fitness cannot be relied upon.
I don't believe the story though for a number of reasons. Firstly I don't think Rafa is likely to spend that kind of money, least of all on an English player. Secondly I can't believe, even though they have the excellent Dawson, that Spurs have allowed Ledley's contract to erode so badly. Thirdly, 8 grand a week? can't be right.
The one thing that makes me think it may be possible to get him is the bitter experience spurs had in the Sol Campbell affair. He was allowed to go for nothing and they vowed never to get caught like that again. If they think King won't sign a new deal then they'll offload like a shot. If it's possible, I'd rip their arm off at the elbow.

17 million....

I think if we bid that we can kiss our new right winger goodbye.

In saying that, he would be a good asset if we do aquire him - but I don't believe we will.

I don't necessarily think so. Glenn Johnson from Chelsea converting from full-back would be my first choice, followed by Jermaine Pennant from Brum and Zoltan Gera from West Brom in that order. All would be available (with the possible exception of Pennant) for 5 million or less.

i still don't understand why we didn't go for pennant when he was available. he's a better player than SWP imo.

Sod Pennant, yea he's good no doubt, but why not go for Lennon as well? I don't know whether Tottenham would let us have another one of their bright players providing we get King.

If not, why not Theo Walcott? Only problem is Man USA and Chelski are sniffing around. Time to strike while the iron is hot.

That's the problem, we can't win a straight fight with Chelski, they will outbid us everytime - £5M is small change to them - were it is a sizeable part of out budget.
