Reds to play juve for heysel - This wed

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

A Liverpool under-19 team will honour the memory of the 39 fans that lost their lives at the 1985 Heysel disaster by playing a friendly match against Juventus in Italy on Wednesday afternoon.
An Anfield delegation, including chief executive Rick Parry and club chaplain Bill Bygroves, flew out to Italy this morning.

The game, which was agreed between the two clubs prior the Champions League tie in April at the request of Mr Otello Lorentini, founder of the Association of the Heysel victims, will take place in the town of Arezzo, near Florence.

"Mr Lorentini requested that we play the game in Arezzo as this was the hometown of the majority of the 39 victims, including his son Roberto, and it will be played in the spirit of friendship and respect," says Bygroves.

"The aim is to consolidate the good relations that have been forged between Liverpool and Juventus since Heysel 20 years ago and provide a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives in that terrible tragedy."

A statement issued by Italy's Permanent Committee Against Violence In Sport reads: "This game want to transmit a message against violence in sport by and for the youngsters so that it remains in the memory of future generations."

Both teams will attend a service at Arezzo cathedral prior to the game.

Of the playing squad that has travelled, six of the players are from the Academy with the other ten being reserve team members based at Melwood. Hughie McAuley is in charge of them.

Nice to see that there is still some honour and respect in sport. Nice one LFC and Juve. :)

Good idea, I mean there is no way people on here would think of looking on the official Liverpool FC site.

I take back everything I said.

and the LMC award for contributing nothing to the topic and later complaining about lack of contribution to topics along with attempting to be a moderator goes to ........ Leon.

hardly a surprise, now is it?
