last year you all though Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, Beckham were the best midfield and they were rubbish, Portugal played you off the pitch and you had very little posession.

I don't rate gerrard and Lampard together. I've never rated Beckham (the kournikova of football) and Cole isn't a winger just a player not good enough to play in the middle for Chelsea.

England have two world class forwards in Owen and Rooney and will have two class cenre backs too which is a good start. I think the goalkeeper issue is week and England lack any good wingers (Ryan Giggs is only good english footballer-apologies to welsh folk).

Who will keep the ball for England, I hate Roy Keane but he keeps the ball just passes it around. Thats the type of player england need, Gerrard will go for the 40 ft hollywood pass everytime and Lampard will be running forward to try to get goals (and he'll probably get a couple) but who will hold the ball for England.

Unless you have somebody to hold the ball in midfield and give England some decent posession, you have very little chance. A couple of wingers and freedom from injuries also good.

I think they'll get to the quarters but thats it.

This is a brilliant take!

There is no holder for England.  There just is not anyone in the Xabi/Keane/Viera mold on the England squad.  As much as I would love to see them win, this is the achilles heel of the squad.  There are plenty of bodies to fill the other positions, even world class all stars sitting on the bench.

But there is no MIDFIELD GENERAL

portugal were one nil down and couldnt get out of their half mate, when we had rooney on the pitch it looked like we were going to beat them comfortably. when rooney went off they gained confidence and we sat back, but even after all that it still took penalties to beat us and it was on their own patch with a fanatical crowd behind them.
gerrard and lampard are better on the ball than roy keane ever was so i dont worry about the skill levels of our centre mid pairing. england have been close in the past few years but luck has never been with them, but unlike other nations like the czechs all englands best players are now entering their prime and play major roles for teams that have been very successfull in europe.
the likes of scholes and beckham have been holding england back but now almost by default sven is getting near to the right team.you scoff at joe cole but he`s a good player mate that will cause plenty of teams problems.
every team needs a bit of luck but i think the only luck england need is to get all their players to germany fit.
dont underestimate this england team mate they`re very good and more importantly there very hard to beat.
i`ve never been much of an england fan because growing up lfc is more important than england and i still feel that way, but i can also see that all the little pieces of the jigsaw are coming together and i`ve got a feeling this side is going to do it.

England need a class goalie (maybe Robinson can get there ), a left midfielder, a holding midfielder, a good right winger and injury free, together with a bit of luck.

if england changed to a 3-5-2 all our problems would be solved. however there's no chance in a million years that sven would do this. in a 4-4-2 we have no shape or balance and we look all over the place.

I think England,Italy,Spain,Germany and Holland all have a good chance of winning the world cup and i don't think a South American team will win it as not all their players are used to playing in European conditions.
