Best world cup pundit

International Football/Football World Wide - General Discussion

Couldn't put this up as a poll as there are more than ten options but it should be interesting nontheless.

Who, in your opinion has been the best pundit working for either BBC or ITV during this world cup? Personally I can't stand ITV and think BBC is far superior in every department (Motson aside). My personal favourites have been O'Neill (who doesn't sit on the fence), Strachan and Leonardo (who's been a revelation).

Just to let you know who you have to choose from here:

Alan Hansen (bbc)
Alan Shearer (bbc)
Ian Wright (bbc)
Lee Dixon (bbc)
Leonardo (bbc)
Marcel Desailly (bbc)
Gordon Strachan (bbc)
Martin O'Neil (bbc)
Mark Lawrenson (bbc)
Mick McCarthy (bbc)
Ally McCoist (itv)
Andy Townsend (itv)
Robbie Earle (itv)
Sam Allardyce (itv)
Stuart Pearce (itv)
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (itv)
Jay Jay Okocha (itv)
Ruud Gullit (itv)
Alan Curbishley (itv)
Terry Venables (itv)

I like hansen and o'neil because they are very good at analysing the games and make people aware of why games are panning out like they are. O'neil commented at half time when spain were losing in the spain vs tunisia game that spain would win with more width, they put joaquin on and tear tunisia to pieces. I cant believe england wentfor McClaren rather than him. Leonardo and desailly give a different perspective which is good to see and i like the way  desailly looks moddy when france do shi.t :D

O'Neill's credentials were underlined in the build-up to the Togo v France game after a disbelieving Gary Lineker asked Alan Shearer if there was any truth in the rumours that he would be the next England coach. After Shearer had filibustered - 'I've had a phone call off Steve McClaren two or three weeks ago asking if I'd have a conversation after the World Cup' - it was left to O'Neill to provide the punchline: 'Your name cropped up at the interview I did for England. I said no.'

The others in the studio laughed, but rather uncomfortably as it dawned on them that O'Neill wasn't joking. The reason McClaren - the brave son of York sitting at the right hand of the Swede - was given the job was because he said 'yes' to the Shearer question while Big Phil Scolari said 'who?'

Agree that ITV have been awful this time around. I think they do a decent enough job covering the Champions League but their World Cup format sucks most of the time. I can't figure out why Jim Rosenthal (why they always drag him out for the World Cup?) and Steve Ryder (excellent if it's golf or grandstand) get the prime time slots ahead of the excellent Matt Smith and Gabby. Venables and Gullit are ok but Mcoist and Robbie Earle are pretty terrible.

The Beeb are miles ahead in every department (Lawrensen's jokes aside). Lineker is smooth as ever, Hansen is consistent as ever, Leonardo has been excellent and I never thought i would say this but Lee Dixon is turning into an excellent pundit (did i just say that?) I don't have a problem with Motty. I'd happily swap him for Martin Tyler and Andy Gray but there's something traditional about Motty presiding over England's latest disasterous attempt at the World Cup.

ITV are terrible and mccoist just states the obvious, no inisight. Hansen is a bit too reluctant to say England play cr*p when they do so O'Neill for me.

Can somebody tell me what Ian Wright is there for?

Agreed . Although Mark Lawrenson gets on my tit.z, Id still stick with bbc. O'Neill and Hansen are first class. Ian Wright can add a bit of humour to the party too.

Comedy value.

It's just funny when he says daft things like 'African teams like Saudi Arabia'.  :D

Also, you should have seen the look on his face during one of Serbia's group games when Lineker asked him if he "liked a bit of S&M". Priceless.

The adverts take the pi$$ on itv, every 2 minutes and when the games about to kick off. Kunts.

Agree with everyone on here that itv are shite beyond belief. I think even the uktvG2 coverage is probably better than theirs. Clive 'I love bummin' on about Man u from 99' gets right on my tits and as for andy townsend - you've gotta wonder what desperate middle aged itv sport exec he's shafting (man or woman  :p ) to keep getting used. The beeb have got the better analysis coverage of the world cup by a mile, it's just a pity that it's let down by motty struggling to remember that it's the world cup he's commentating on never mind what teams are playing; "Just look at those fans in the stadium it must be the world cup" - motty.  :help
I can't really pick out the best commentator on any of the channels as they all have their annoying little quirks but as for analysis Hansen and O'Niell shit on the rest. They are really aware of what tactics the managers are using in the games and manage to get right to the bottom of any incidents as well. The best from these two as well is that they aren't wearing the rose-tinted specs that all the other pundits seem to have on when it comes to england. Rescue Venables from itv and put him with these two and then you've got a line-up that will piss all over the opposition pundits - even SKY come the premiership.
