Okay, this is a big rumour from the Evening Standard (London) via SSN, so it does have a bit of credibility.
So Stevie G wants out, just a few weeks after winning the CL. He's told the club, Chel$ki have offered £32m, graffiti and shirt burnings dominate the news. He's sitting at home, upset, reluctant, waiting for the call from Liverpool saying that they've accepted an offer, and generally quite depressed and aprehensive, after all, this is Liverpool. The phone rings, and sure enough it's from LFC, but it isn't Parry on the other end, it's Benitez. Rafa knows the score. Maybe he hasn't seen everything eye to eye with Stevie, but he knows how important he is to Liverpool, so he makes hiim an offer he can't refuse. It's not about money or squad status or trophies. Rafa makes Stevie a promise of a player, who we will sign. When Stevie hears the name, he stops his sulking and agrees to pen a new contract, as long as this player signs on. That player, is Micheal Owen.
At least that's what the Standard is saying. We've heard this rumour before and have mentioned SWP, Raul, Figo and a few others. The Owen rumour has been around all summer and is widley regarded as a slow news day column filler, but this says that it is cosher. I said a while ago that, I wouldn't start on this subject again, which is why I'm not going to offer an opinion, but I thought it best to share.
