------------------------reina/carson------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------
josemi/finnan- carragher/hyypia/whoever we sign - Traore/risse
-------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------Alonso - Sissoko/Hamann---------------
------------------------------------------------------------
Garcia/Pongolle--------------------------------kewell/Zenden
---------------------Le Tellac/Gerrard-----------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------
----------------crouch/morientes/cisse/baros-----------------

I figure Crouch will play away matches, Cisse at home.

although he has great strength and ariel ability he lacks ALOT of pace. and lets face it in the epl you have players like henry who will absolutely rip him apart.

answered your question?  ???

yeh spose ur rite but he shud still be in the team this season this defo while the new centreback gets used 2 englsh football. It'll be hard replacing hyypia.

Cant see Alonso and Gerrard being paired in a 4 man midfield.

Surely this debate is an example of Horses for Courses. Real Madrid have Galacticos that must play week in week out because of their talent, which is why Owen found himself on the bench so much. Leaving out Raul or Ronaldo is like leaving out a certain goal (or it used to be). We don't have that, and Rafa takes each game as it comes. Having a set starting 11 is not a good idea anymore, as different teams play in different ways. Some suggested ideas are talking about one upfront, which is fine for the games against Man Ure and Chel$ki when we should be a little more wary defensivly, but what about when we play Charlton or WBA who are likely to play 5 across the back. As Rafa takes things one game at a time, he devises tactics that will work against each of our opponents individualy. Mourinho does this, so does Jol. For example, it is likely that you will see Cisse starting against Boro because Southgate and Ehgiog (spelling?) are getting on a bit and don't have so much pace, whereas Nando will surely start against Sunderland, because his wealth of Experience will take the premiership newcomers on a rollercoaster. Of course, I am not Rafa, and he probably (hopefully) knows more than me about this, but this seems to be his way.
The whole theme of Rafa's summer buys so far has been the different option. Crouch, Sissoko, Gonzales and Zenden all offer alternatives to the players which we already had in their prospective possitions. We now have depth and choice which will allow Rafa to look at the teams and the individuals that we will face, and counter them. Obviously Gerrard, Carra, Riise, Alonso, Cisse and a few others will be making the majority of appearances, but we certainly won't see a set formation or 11 that will come out week after week.

How can u not c that.Gerrard is more of an attcking midfielder while xabi sits bak.Its a perfect combination.Rafa mite play morientes in the gap between the midfield and strikers a think cisse will start ahead of crouch most games.BUut crouch is a a brilliant sub 2 bring on if u need a goal.will prob be a 4-4-1-1 this season a think.  :)

Riise/Gonzalez/Kewell/Zenden       Alonso/Gerrard      Gerrard/Garcia

      Warnock/Riise/Traore      Hyypia         Carragher       Barragan/Josemi/Finnan

                                             Reina/Carson

What a squad we can put out with so many possibilities except for centre backs that is! we need a lot of  :help  in that department!
however apart from that....this is what my ideal formation would be like. although rafa won't keep to the same formation as i have said before on this thread.

We don't have one formation for all of our games, I think  you will see a combination of 4-4-2 and 4-5-1, possibly even 3-5-2[I think this formation would only be used in Europe].

There isn't one formation that we will use for the whole season, it's just not going to happen. Benitez is too smart and tacticful to use one formation, he's going to use varietes of formations.

i`m not a big fan of changing formations or even teams for that matter. i dont think players know if their coming or going half the time if the managers try to be too technical. i think managers should find a system that allows the players at his disposal to utilise their abilities to the maximum, for example if playing a third holding type centre mid allows us to get the best out of key players like xavi and stevie then fine.

In the Premiership we would get murdered with three defenders at the back, I can only see that formation working in the CL but not in the Premiership.

Don't underestimate them, they might be new to the league but on their day they could be dangerous as any other team in the league.

I think Sissoko is more like an AM than a DM? And good point putting Pongolle on the RW.

I like the 4-4-2 formation;

            Cisse/Baros/Morientes/Crouch
Zenden   Gerrard   Xabi Alonso   Luis Garcia
Riise       Hyypia    Carragher     Finnan
                        Reina

Thats the great thing about this lad, when he actually got a chance to play for Valencia, he was kind of like didi, break up the play in the defence, the run it down the field and park himself outside the box, I saw him belt a couple crackers from outside the box, mostly off of scraps and loose balls.
