Yes, Red Indian, Ronnie Whelan was greatly unsung. I'd read an interview where John "Digger" Barnes briefly compared Whelan and Steven Gerrard. Where Gerrard has in abundance strength, stamina and lung busting abilities, Whelan is so intelligent that he did so much effectively with econimical effort and if Gerrard can acquire Whelan's strengths, he'd be a complete midfielder.
If the period is the past 10 years, the candidates are Carra and Hamann who are still here and Babbel during the treble winning year. Gary Mac can't be considered as an unsung hero, because he does get his share of credit because his contributions tend to be more obvious - like the telling pass which led to goal or his goal conversion from free-kicks.
