I really like Mr. Tomkins. I understand CGGY though because he tries to write beautifully, (which he accomplishes in my opinion) and that means that there will be extra words and difficult vocabulary used.

For some of us non-Scousers (I am one of many of us here) who don't know a lot of the slang of Merseyside and England even (e.g. woollyback??), it is refreshing to hear someone intellectualize and wax poetic about the triumphant experience of being a Red fan this year despite the difficult vicissitudes, which we have gone through in years past.

As an aside, I was a little surprised to learn upon skimming through the book (I received my copy Monday) that he only writes about the end of Houllier through the CL.

But Liverpool FC is larger than any little niche or pigeon hole. As we grow larger and win more and more trophies, fans of all walks of life will express their love for this wonderful club in various ways. I appreciate all of them. God bless Liverpool FC.

A Woolyback, or wool for short is someone who lives in the surrounding areas (usually rural) of Liverpool.

Often people who are wools who want to be scousers or believe they are socusers are referred to as 'plastic scousers'.

Just finished the book last night Jonny. Am going abroad for 6 weeks on Monday and was intending on reading it on the plane over - The book is excellent from start to finish. Very well written and not at all like your typical footy books. Although Tomkins does a decent job of being objective you can still tell it is written by someone who loves the club.

Best bit of the book is the chapter called; 'This is Anfield, isn't it?' where he talks about the ghosts in the famous old stadium. After reading that i really despaired at the clubs plans to move house.

Bloody brilliant read. I recomend any fan to get a copy.

The shock, the pain, the humiliation of being called a Woolyback !!!!

I should be used to the label "palstic" scouser by now I suppose although I maintain I WAS born in Merseyside but for some (Cough Cough Lyns !!!) that appears not to be enough

Neither is it enough to have worked in the city for the last 15 years or so neither I presume is it enough to choose to have our son born in Liverpool Women's and call him "Jacob Ellis Shankly Jones" :lookaround

Back to the topic ....Paul Tomkins is a superb writer and appeals to the worldwide fanbase that is LFC supporters.

Writers like Leon epitomise however the passion and fervour that is inherant in fans who are born and bred in Liverpool so in that sense the two writers are poles apart as they come from different perspectives. However, both are valid and the choice of which you prefer is a personal one.........

All I wil say is I've never been reduced to tears reading a Tomkins article but Leon's magnificant account of Istanbul and Lyns's also were akin to watching a Lassie film and I blubbered like baby !!!!!!!!
