I'm wracking my brains here tryin' to remember a solid 24 carat "star" that we have signed .
All of our legends (including King Kenny) made their name internationally at least at Liverpool.

ps. Cisse is possibly the only player who already had international recognition prior to joining us .

Short memory Woof - what about Diouf ?? Pure gold :p

When L'pool bought Dudek, he was already established player - player of the year in Netherlands (which for a goalie is difficult).
But I'm saying that just because I'm Polish :D

As the European Cup holders look to totally reshape their squad (and not merely out with the French and in with the Spanish) Liverpool are reported, in The Guardian, to have around £25m to spend.  The Guardian speculates that because the target players have not been snapped up for the initial bids Steven Gerrard may yet be sold to create a sufficient transfer budget.

On top of Dirk Kuyt (Feyenoord £10m) who is interesting Liverpool and Newcastle, The Guardian suggests that Liverpool are bidding for Jose Reina (Villarreal £6m), Peter Crouch (Southampton £5m), Gabriel Millito (Real Zaragoza £6m), Owen Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), Miguel (Benfica), Mark Gonzalez (Albacete) and Juanfran (Real Madrid).

Clearly a transfer budget of arounf £40m would be needed to land this lot and the lack of value in the players being released - Cheyrou, Diouf, Smicer, Biscan, Diarra et al - means that Liverpool will have to focus on getting a decent price for Milan Baros or getting 3/4 players rather than 6/7.

Kuyt is the latest in a line of quality DUtch forwards - van Nistelrooy, Makaay, Kluivert, van Hooijdonk - who have recently gone from scoring heavily in Holland to international football and big money foreign moves.

Obviously the last big scoring forward to move from Holland - Mateja Kezman - has not set the world on fire, but some players are not suited to a squad system.  It is far from certain how many goals that any major forward would score without a run in the team.

Overall £10m would be a bargain if he is a young Ruud van Nistelrooy - as long as he doesn't morph into a Patrick Kluivert.  At £10m this transfer looks like a possibility rather than a definite move.

Hurry up and snap him up rafa :buttrock

I have to agree. I haven't seen him palying much, but from what Iv'e heard, he sounds quality. A young Ruud? 10mill? Definitly need to snap him up quickly, before Chelsea or Real make an outragous bid like 40mill.

Igor off to Istanbul

Besiktas move for Liverpool star
15:11 June, 16, 2005
Igor Biscan could leave Liverpool for Besiktas this summer

The versatile Croatian is out of contract at Anfield this summer and has been linked with a number of clubs, the latest being the Turkish outfit.

Besiktas coach Riza Calimbay has confirmed an offer has been tabled for the player, who is making his mind up over the move during the next few days.

"Things will be clearer this week or next week," said Calimbay. "The offer we made is a good one. He's thinking about it at the moment.

“Apparently he's got offers from Spain and Italy too. We've took the necessary actions and now we're waiting to hear from him."

I'd rather settle for the 3-4 players and hang onto Gerrard.
Also in a complete about face I'd hang on to Igor (as a squad player) , under Rafa he has shown us why Houllier bought him in the first place . He'd never be the first name on my team sheet but if we're counting our pennies on transfers i have no problem keeping Igor in the squad.

I heard about the Spanish player coming for a medical last night but didnt want to say anyhing incase it was rubbish,   :D

Qatar club Al Rayyan claim they are in competition with Liverpool for Luis Figo, who may well be surplus to requirements at Real Madrid. Officials from the Middle Eastern club say they plan to trump Liverpool’s offer for the player.

Liverpool have also been credited with a serious interest in Figo’s understudy, 20 year old Juanfran. Benitez failed to land the promising right winger last summer in the Michael Owen negotiations, instead ending up with Antonio Nunez, is reported to be sniffing around again.

Real have meanwhile apparently contacted senior officials at Anfield to check on the availability of Steven Gerrard. The captain has already stated his intentions to stay and is ready to discuss a deal sooner rather than later. Chief executive Rick Parry has echoed those sentiments and is keen to draw an end to this frustrating saga and tie the player up on a long term contract.

Doubts have surfaced over the transfer of Villarreal goalkeeper Jose Reina, with another English club, believed to be Arsenal, entering the negotiations at a late stage. The player has already stated his desire to come to Merseyside, but there appear to be some details yet to sort out.

Talks are also reportedly ongoing with Feyenoord over striker Dirk Kuyt. Holland’s top scorer this year is keen to play for Benitez yet it seems that the clubs can’t agree a fee.

A rumour doing the rounds on Wednesday was that a Liverpool target was in the city taking a medical ahead of a proposed transfer. He was said to have flown back to Spain immediately afterwards without being named.

Other players linked include Benfica’s defender Miguel and Inter Milan’s Turkish midfielder Emre.

Meanwhile, El Hadji Diouf has finally completed his protracted move to Bolton for an undisclosed sum and European Cup final hero Vladimir Smicer has sealed a switch to Bordeaux.

Biscan has been offered a deal by both Fenerbahce and Besiktas in Turkey while also attracting the attention of clubs in Spain and Italy.

One player expected to be one of the first out of the door was Czech striker Milan Baros. Having flirted with a number of European clubs such as Barcelona and Valencia it appears that with the only interested coming from Lyon he has decided to stay and fight for his place in the team.

Chris Kirkland is receiving admiring glances from West Brom and Celtic as both teams plan to offer him first team football in a year long loan deal. It is not yet clear whether Benitez will sanction such a move.

Liverpool to hold contract talks with Gerrard next week

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will hold talks with the European champions next week over a new contract aimed at keeping him at the club beyond his current two-year deal.

Gerrard, 25, has been linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid following a season which finished with him lifting the Champions League.

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry will now talk to Gerrard over a new deal to keep him at the club, with negotiating set to start next week when the player's agent Struan Marshall returns from holiday.

"The priority is to keep Steven and build a winning team around him," Parry told BBC Radio Five Live. "As long as he wants to stay, we want to keep him.

"There's a common aim to get things sorted, we want him to stay and hope Steven wants to stay. All being well it will be sorted quickly, there is certainly no panic.

lets just hope it does happen then

Opta analyse the G-factor
by Duncan Alexander -  created on 16 Jun 2005

on the other hand.....

"The Merseysiders recorded a win percentage of just 40 per cent when Gerrard played, a figure that rose to 63 per cent when he was missing. The number of goals Liverpool scored per game was also higher when Gerrard was not playing."

2004-05 With Gerrard Without Gerrard
            Games 30       8
            Wins 12          5
            Draws 6          1
            Losses 12       2
            Goals For 36   16
            Average Goals For 1.2            2
            Goals Against 32  9
Average Goals Against 1.07  1.12
            Win % 40%     62%
Points per game 1.40    2.00

It was a similar (though less pronounced) trend in 2003-04, when Liverpool again had a superior win percentage when their midfield dynamo was not in the team.

2003-04 With Gerrard Without Gerrard
              Games 34         4
              Wins 14            2
              Draws 12          0
              Losses 8           2
              Goals For 51      4
              Average Goals For 1.5     1
Goals Against    33             4
Average Goals Against 0.97     1.00
              Win %   41%      50%
Points per game 1.59       1.50

That is not to say that Gerrard would not be missed at Anfield, just that his departure need not be a crushing setback for Rafa Benitez's European champions.

:lookaround

personally id love stevie to stay in our team. but part of me relates to his body language/general 'kip' of him kind of thing...and i dont see the PROUD spirit that i see in J.C's character....does anyone else agree ??? or not as much of it..

YES he was ecstatic post match (at the parade i thought he took a bit too much of a backseat role on the bus??)
i know he was at the front, but ive watched it about 3 times now and i dont see him OVER THE MOON as id expect. compared with some of the others..( maybe still overwhelmed, i dont know)..
it was 'fat lenny' the tw*t in istanbul (sorry for bein prejudiced 'liverpoolanytime' !!!) goin to JC with the trophy first that got this in me head bout ste.g.
i just couldnt help thinking at the time (still do) that jamie carragher is the REAL deal.

sorry for the long post guys

:O
and all the brackets )))))))((((((((
