Funny thing is (correct me if i'm wrong) Liverpool have never signed a "star"  . To the best of my recollections we always signed good players and turned them into stars .

I'm wracking my brains here tryin' to remember a solid 24 carat "star" that we have signed .
All of our legends (including King Kenny) made their name internationally at least at Liverpool.

ps. Cisse is possibly the only player who already had international recognition prior to joining us .

Morientes ???

Nice one AB , I guess when were talkin' about "stars" a lot depends on how high you set the bar .  :D

Excellent player, being part Portuguese myself, I take quite an interest in the Portuguese national team, and he kept Paulo Ferreira out of a starting position at Euro 2004.

He had a good Euro 2004, very solid at the back. Can't see why we would go for him personally as he is probaly no better than Finnan, however if Rafa was palnning to sell Josemi, I'd definitley take a look at Miguel. He'd defo give Finnan some stiff competition.

I don't know how to post up a link but on SKY's website there is a thing about Milito being keen to come.

on the other hand.....

"The Merseysiders recorded a win percentage of just 40 per cent when Gerrard played, a figure that rose to 63 per cent when he was missing. The number of goals Liverpool scored per game was also higher when Gerrard was not playing."

2004-05 With Gerrard Without Gerrard
            Games 30       8
            Wins 12          5
            Draws 6          1
            Losses 12       2
            Goals For 36   16
            Average Goals For 1.2            2
            Goals Against 32  9
Average Goals Against 1.07  1.12
            Win % 40%     62%
Points per game 1.40    2.00

It was a similar (though less pronounced) trend in 2003-04, when Liverpool again had a superior win percentage when their midfield dynamo was not in the team.

2003-04 With Gerrard Without Gerrard
              Games 34         4
              Wins 14            2
              Draws 12          0
              Losses 8           2
              Goals For 51      4
              Average Goals For 1.5     1
Goals Against    33             4
Average Goals Against 0.97     1.00
              Win %   41%      50%
Points per game 1.59       1.50

That is not to say that Gerrard would not be missed at Anfield, just that his departure need not be a crushing setback for Rafa Benitez's European champions.

:lookaround

personally id love stevie to stay in our team. but part of me relates to his body language/general 'kip' of him kind of thing...and i dont see the PROUD spirit that i see in J.C's character....does anyone else agree ??? or not as much of it..

YES he was ecstatic post match (at the parade i thought he took a bit too much of a backseat role on the bus??)
i know he was at the front, but ive watched it about 3 times now and i dont see him OVER THE MOON as id expect. compared with some of the others..( maybe still overwhelmed, i dont know)..
it was 'fat lenny' the tw*t in istanbul (sorry for bein prejudiced 'liverpoolanytime' !!!) goin to JC with the trophy first that got this in me head bout ste.g.
i just couldnt help thinking at the time (still do) that jamie carragher is the REAL deal.

sorry for the long post guys

:O
and all the brackets )))))))((((((((

That's the catch-22!!  Stevie is loved by the fans, but the statistics are supprising.

Link to full story

I'd love for him to stay.  But can we afford to keep him, at the expense of not being able to fund players to fix the problems we have?  I just don't know - probably why I'm not a manager!

If we do sell him for £30M to Real, then that gives us, what, about £25M (after agents fees, expenses, etc)?  That would give us at least 2 quality players.  Add to that, the rumoured £25-30M, already allocated for transfers, and we would have sufficient funds to rebuild the team.  Rafa, himself, has admitted that he is being fustrated by the over-inflated prices after the CL success, so will he make the ultimate sacrifice? Probably not, but not because of team requirements.

But is it worth it, if we loose Stevie.  A year ago, we would have said the same thing about Owen.  Liverpool survived, and won the European Cup (admittedly SG had a big hand in this)!  Somewhere down the line, Stevie, will be tempted by the £120K per week being touted by Real.  So should we not sell, when his market value is high after the CL?

Part of me thinks we should cash in.  But my heart says no.  But I don't think we can afford to keep him anymore.  We desparately need to rebuild/strengthen the team to compete with Chelsea/Arsenal/ManPLC - to do that we need money.

Real Zaragoza defender Gabriel Milito has invited Liverpool to make a move for him.

Liverpool are reported to be keen on signing the highly-rated Argentinian as they look to bolster their squad for next season.

Milito has established himself as one of the best defenders in Spain after an impressive spell at La Romareda.

Manchester United, Barcelona and Valencia have all been linked with Milito but Reds boss Rafa Benitez is believed to trying to thrash out a deal to steal a march on his rivals.

Liverpool have been boosted by the news that Zaragoza may be forced to sell Milito due to their financial problems and the South American has admitted he would find it hard to turn down a move to Anfield.

Milito, who is currently away on international duty with Argentina, admitted he wants his future resolved one way or another as soon as possible.

"If Liverpool make a concrete offer then it would be very difficult to say no," said Milito.

"I am happy at Zaragoza but it is not every day the champions of Europe are interested in you.

"I has asked my club for a fast solution. They already know my position and I do not want to spend my holidays with doubts on where I will play next season."

Guti fancies Prem switch

Real Madrid ace Guti has once again emphasised his desire to quit the club and play in the Premiership with Arsenal and Liverpool among his admirers.

The 28-year-old midfielder is tired of being the eternal substitute at Real no matter how well he is playing and wants the chance of regular first-team football

"I have a contract with Madrid until 2008 but it is true that I hope to start a new period in my career and open the way in another team," he said.

"I also feel I could play in another league," said Guti, who is clear about his favoured destination.

"There is nothing concrete at the moment, but I have always said that if I left Madrid, I would like to play in England.

"The English league is ideal and I would be willing to go if the move benefited the club (Madrid)," he told Marca.

In Spain Guti has been linked with Juventus, AC Milan, Liverpool and Arsenal.

"I am proud that clubs like that, all of them big clubs, could be thinking about me," he said. "They have great squads and coaches and are capable of doing important things. It would be very interesting to play for any of them.

"I have spoken to (Emilio) Butragueno and (Arrigo) Sacchi (Madrid's vice-president and director of sport). They know how I feel and what I want and know we have to look for a solution that is for the good of all of us," he said.

Pictured here with stevie in Ibiza on wednesday, see he just wants to shake hands with the european captain  :D

Wouldn't it be funny if the press rubbished on about Stevie going to Madrid cos of that picture, when in fact Guti is trying to become friendly with Stevie G before he moves to Liverpool.

To be honest, haven't really seen that much of Guti.. seen a bit of him the few times he came on last season.. and he looked alright...
Exactly what qualities would he bring to the club if he came??
Is he an Attacking Midfielder??
