Cggy, I think i would prefer getting players i've never heard of.
That way I don't have too many expectations and when/if they shine i'll be ecstatic.

I am prepared to give rafa my full confidence when buying players even if its players you havnt heard much about. Nobody had heard of henry pirres the list is endless we have to have faith

yer but look at Diouf, Diao, Cheyrou, Biscan, le tallec, Pellegrino, Nunez, Josemi, to name a few all of them havent done anything in the prem with us have they?

I would disagree with Biscan. Even though we are not keeping him, he has shown his true ability under Benitez and I am sad he is not staying. As for Josemi and Nunez, I think we are making the age old mistake of not allowing a player to settle in the country for five mins before writing them off. Give them time to settle. Not everyone can go to a foreign country and shine immediately. Robben didn't need time but some players do. Give them more time, a pre season and lets see what they can do. As for the rest, Houllier's ability for spotting new talent is probably the worse I have ever seen. I have never seen £100+ spent on so many average and poor players. I am sure no one including Benitez can't be as bad as Houllier.

I know what you mean cggy but Rafa likes to spend him money sensibly opposed to GH's tranfer tactics of spending £10m on Diouf :;):

Shanklygates.co.uk did a piece two years ago about all the players we were linked with in Houllier's last summer in charge. I think the final figure they came up with was close to an astonishing 200 players! They did it on a daily basis, with the players name and the source of the rumour?

How many players did Gerrard Houllier sign that summer?

Two first teamers, Harry Kewell and Steve Finnan, and while Le Tallec and Pongolle also arrived, they actually had been signed the previous summer.

Two out of 200.

So far we have been told that Millito, Reina, Kuyt, Evra, Hargreaves, Zenden and Crouch were "as good as done" and while there seems to be a lot of truth in the Reina story, nothing has happened with the others, let alone the galaxy of other players we are linked with.

Its the silly season: the press know we are revamping the team, have some money to spend and are European Champions, so given that the tabloids are all smoke and mirror merchants, its only natural that we're "linked" with so many players.

Pay zero attention................although its fairly clear we have talked to Reina.

That, and the fact that Liverpool are the team with a lot of attention focused on them, so agents will use "Liverpool are interested" as a tool to enhance their clients position, within their current club, and other possible suitors!

Sad but true hawkmoon269. I think our name is being used to help Madrid get rid of their dead wood. Our name is being attached to half of their squad at the moment.

Miguel was class in euro 2004 keeping ferreira out of the Portugal side, but at 4-5 million when we have Finnan with Josemi as cover...not really essential.
But he is a decent player and would improve the squad.
Rafa needs to determine what areas of the squad are weaker though.

So players must be well known in order to be quality? How many knew of Xabi Alonso before we signed him? Not many.

Funny thing is (correct me if i'm wrong) Liverpool have never signed a "star" . To the best of my recollections we always signed good players and turned them into stars .

I'm wracking my brains here tryin' to remember a solid 24 carat "star" that we have signed .
All of our legends (including King Kenny) made their name internationally at least at Liverpool.

ps. Cisse is possibly the only player who already had international recognition prior to joining us .

well, we made Rush a star, then sold him to Juve, then bought him back. Even though he was a star before leaving, we still bought, and he was still a star. So we sorta did sign a star. Even thoguh we made him a star. I'm confused now....
