Boudewijn Zenden's father has revealed that Liverpool have approached Middlesbrough about their midfield star.

The former Chelsea man is out of contract in the summer, and Boro boss Steve McClaren had been confident of keeping hold of the 28-year-old after he proved to be a revelation in the centre of midfield.

However his Riverside future is now in some doubt after Pierre Zenden, the player's father and agent, confirmed that Reds boss Rafa Benitez has enquired about his situation.

The Reds have been buoyed after their UEFA Champions League success, although Benitez is still looking to make changes at Anfield after their disappointing league campaign.

Whist Boro are keen to retain his services, Zenden is out of contract in the summer and is free to seal a move to Anfield should he wish.

His father admitted that despite his contentment with life at The Riverside, the midfielder was always keen to further his career at a higher level.

"Someone from Liverpool has talked to Middlesbrough," Zenden snr told Sky Sports News.

"Liverpool did a wonderful job in the Champions League final and they have a Spanish manager who Bolo knows very well from his time in Spain.

"He likes Middlesbrough very much, the fans voted him player of the year and Steve McClaren is a nice trainer, but he wants to play as high as possible."
