Finnan is gettin on a bit and riise might want to leave for norway. Carra could get crocked again and then we rely on the youth. We could do with some back up defenders as well as owen back

All academic I think, not really much chance of him swallowing pride and coming back even if we did want him. Probably Arsenal would be about the favorites to sign him if he came back over to England, but my feeling is that he would probably stay abroad.
All this stuff about 'first options' is a myth as well. Players go where THEY want to go, clubs can agree amongst themselves whatever they wish.
On the question of Rush, those who believe he came back from Italy a better player are allowing their memories to play tricks on them. I'm not a big one for stats but I would be absolutely staggered if they didn't indicate a significant blunting of his cutting edge while he was away.
No, those who have mentioned centre-halves and central midfield players are nearer the mark in my view. I believe Gerrard will definately leave so we will need to buy at least two central midfielders, and the need for a centre-half with pace is glaringly obvious for everyone.

a contract should mean a contract.

if they ever bring in foreign player policy (reduce numbers), and wage capping, then perhaps players may honour their contracts

Whoever advised owen to join real madrid must be more stupid than owen himself. Forget all this nonsense about the experience "making him a better player". The fact is, you only improve if you're playing regularly. Raul has been pants for pretty much 18 months now but there's no chance of him getting dropped. The last coach to drop Raul got sacked a week later.

As Bigmick says, the main question is where can owen realistically go if he wants to leave??? I can't see him ever coming back here and I don't think that Arsenal and Chelasea play a system which would accomodate him.

gotta disagree st micke. owen at the gooners with henry alongaside? ljungberg and pires playing balls over for him. that could be a very scary ( and very eralistically possible) thought.

if we had some way of making a profit by selling baros and buying owen then we should try and get him back. i'd love to see him back for lfc again

I don't think we should get him back. We lost a lot of money on Owen and i'm sure Real would charge more than the £8m they paid for him. Anyway, i just don't think we have the money, and even if we did i think there are other areas of the team that need to be looked at.

Mark Hughes left a mediocre manu team in the mid 80's to try his luck in Spain.  He came back a year later and enjoyed huge success.  It would be nice if Owen came back to us and had similar success but I honestly don't believe Benitez will want him at the end of the season.  He'll probabaly prioritise other areas before looking for another striker.

Even if owen betrayed the team by leaving, I think it would be great to have him back. not only because he is a world class striker but because he is an academy graduate with liverpool. If owen came back, the three best players in the team would be academy graduates, and the three of them are world class. that doesn't happen in many teams nowadays. sure, some might resent him for leaving but If he did come back and scores goals as he has for liverpool before, he would loose the traitor status almost imediately.

I wouldn't hold your breath. He is just saying this about Liverpool to get more games for Real. When he left this club he thought we were going nowhere why would he change his mind with the season we're having.
