Should we get Owen back ? - General

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby hobbes » Mon Feb 14, 2005 7:13 am

Owen had made it clear that he would be leaving real madrid at the end of this season.

Now should we get him back in th squad?

Any views ?

I don't actually think that Owen will leave Madrid and I would like to see what sources have "made it clear", but if he came knocking and we could get him for what we payed for him, or around that mark, I'd take him. Whether he "betrayed" us or not, he is still a Liverpool fan and has even been back to watch the club at least once this season. He is a fantastic goalscorer whose 15 or so league goals this season would have come in very handy. Plus, now we have some real competition for him so he would have to work. Now that we have wingers, his direct, centred attacks would give us an extra dimension up front.

If we can get him, i'd take him.

Agreed.  Owen is a world class striker in anyone's books.  He is now full fit, and injury free. Can you imagine Rafa having to choose between Owen, Baros, Morientes and Cisse?  But with our injury list  this year, it would be a nice choice.  Also, if Owen can score 19/20 goals a season under Houllier, can you image what he would do with the style of play under Rafa?  Look at the amount of chances we squandered in the early stages when Alonso was playing, and we cried out for a killer striker.  Bring on the Killer. :D

[Also might convince SG to stay]

i cant see owen coming back. hes scored 8 la liga goals this year, and is way ahead of raul in goals stakes. its funny how political that club is where Raul will always play, even if he only had one leg hed get picked ahead.
IF though owen wanted to come abck, id like to see him here. hed make an awesome strike force with baros, morientez and cisse. but if he did come back, pongolle and mellor would be quick out the door

I don't think it was ever confirmed - just strong rumours.

F**k Owen, he made his decission and has to live with it, we should move on and buy quality at the back and midfield as when we have everyone fit we'll have Pongolle, Mellor, Cisse, Morientes and Baros to choose from upfront

What about Ian Rush... he came back from Juve and was a far better player.

you cant compare players who played almost a generation apart. the styles and course of play is different.

for example, players from the sixties are different to those of the eighties and so on. comparisons can be made, but they always be a bit lukewarm, as style etc is different.

do you get my drift

I don't think anyone is actually comparing Owen to Rush.  IT's just the situation of his return from Italy, and the potential return of Owen from Spain.  When Rush returned from Italy, even after only a year, he was a more complete player, able to hold the ball up, assisting goals, and defending from the front.

If Owen did come back, maybe he would have learnt someting too (apart from humility!!)
