Bruno cheyrou and steve finnan - Bit of praise

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I know its a wierd topic but i couldn't be bothered doing 2 seperate ones.

Firstly Cheyrou, what do you lot think now? Personally since i saw the Lazio game at the start of pre-season last season i thought he was superb, he didn't look like a bad pllayer playing well, he looked like a great player in average form to be honest. He looked like the "creative spark" the team had been missing.

I think recently he's started to show the fans glimpses of whats going to come. IE the goals, the brilliantly timed run for the header in which if you watch again the way he stops on the edge of the box to gain 5 yards of space is brilliant, also the little interchange before his first goal, the ball and run in the chelsea game from which he scored. He still looks horribley short on confidence though but if he keeps doing what he's doing in terms of effort i'm hopefull this is something which will start to change. Also the goals won't do no harm at all. The fact he has more goals already than Hamann and Gerrard also speaks volumes for his potential imo.

Hopefully he can start to produce on a regular basis and become the player i (and obviously Gerard Houllier) think he can become.

Steve Finnan. I don't care what anybody says he's impressing me more every time i see him. His running off the ball is intelligent, his first touch is sublime, he's two footed, fairly quick, reads the game very well and not affraid to get stuck in. I think technically he is probably one of our most gifted players. I still rate Carr as the better alround player but i think Finnan seems to be improving EVERY match and will soon overtake him.

He reminds me alot of Rob Jones although maybe not as quick he seems technically a bit better than Jones but imo they are VERY similar. The only difference is Finnan looks like he may actually score a goal one day  :p  :)

agree on both players completely. I didnt like cheyrou last season, i didnt see the lazio game so you can probably see why i didnt see his potential. I think he wasnt good last season for lots of reasons, he was probably finding it hard to adjust to the pace of the premiership, he had injuries and wasnt played regularly but what a different player he looks like now. Very pleased with his contribution lately and it seems its come out of nowhere an i think he'll get better.

Finnan for me was on of our best players againt newcastle he showed his defensive qualitys and attacking and is a very good player imo and our defense looked complete.

Cheyrou scored a terrific header, but the first was basically a case of hit the target and score. I thought he had a decent game, goals aside, but nothing that makes me think he was worth signing. It is a marked improvement on what he was doing for us, but I find Houllier's comments on the subject laughable

Cheyrou has gone from sh##e to superb, but remember Smicer has had good spells in the past and then gone back to his old self.

He's done well the last few weeks and i'm very pleased with his attitude... you can see he wants to suceed and if he keeps doing what he's doing theres no reason why this won't happen.

Cheyrou scored a terrific header, but the first was basically a case of hit the target and score. I thought he had a decent game, goals aside, but nothing that makes me think he was worth signing. Yeah but you are clearly missing the point. He got the ball, played it to Owen, got it back, played a great ball to play Heskey through on goal... Given makes a good save and the ball comes out to him. If that had been Owen instead of Heskey it would have been a great assist. Good play by himself helped create his goal so don't try and knock the wall down. It wasn't as if he done f##k all and just stood there an the ball hit his a#se and went in. As for the second that was sheer class alround. Gerrard with a great run and turn (bad defending maybe... but Hughes isnt a bad player). Then the run was top class... the way he stopped for about a second on the edge of the box, he read the cut back off Stevey and scored with a brilliant header. He's already got double Hamann and Gerrard's goal tally put together and he's only made 5 apps this season.

Dom1 you absolutely spot on m8.
Opinions change like the wind. Only a week ago everyone was saying Cheyrou was cr#p, now the general concensous is that he is gr8.....that is until he starts underperforming again.
I always said he needs a good run in the team, and I also believe that he is quality, but I dont think he's there yet, I dont think he'll maitain form like this every week.
And than opinions will change again!
Don't get too exited when he performs well and dont be too critical when he doesn't, not for a season or two at least. The same goes for all the 'young guns', including Diouf, Le Tallec and Pongolle.....Just a thought.

ok i agree in football opinions do change like the wind and it may only take a few below par performances by Cheyrou and he'll get slated. But credit where credits due, during the last few weeks without setting the world on fire with his ability he's weighed in with 4 very important goals, each of different quality, i think this is a shining example of a player with confidence at the moment. I too remember the Lazio game and thinking he looked a tidy player on the ball - always looking for the opening. Since then he's struggled with injury and he's probably struggled with the pace/physical aspect of the English game. I believe playing in a more advanced position - just behind Owen - has helped him as when he gets in the box he does look dangerous. I hope his scoring run will continue and i hope the fans will keep off his back, fair play to Stu for offering a bit of praise!

I also agree Finnan hasn't put a foot wrong since he's got back in the team. It'd be nice if he can get on the scoresheet against the toffees on saturday!

Absolutely, sing his name from the top of the roofs if you want....just pleading to his critics to give him time, something I'd previously been criticized for suggesting, and his fans to not get over exited.
Im a hopeful fan BTW.  :)
