England manager Sven Goran Eriksson stats that english football is in a good place right now

"we are still a young team and if you look at the new talent that has been on show this year we have a feast to pick from,The liverpool player Neil Mellor has been outstanding and he sticks in you mind, he dont give up and that sums up english football for me".

"when you go to as many games as me you can good games and bad games but the if the teams have english players in it they dont give up and run for all they have till the last whistle".

well thats high praise for him ,  do you think he might get picked if we have a friendly ?

Mellor is somewhat a dying breed at the moment (an old fashioned english striker).

If he just loses a couple of pounds.......he would be more mobile.

****** much as i'm a fan of Neil, he's nowhere near international class. The guy is a workhorse and will score a few goals but he's a very limited player.

one of the things i like about eriksson is that he always has words of support and encouragement for young english players. i don't think he's at all hinting about trying mellor out - at least not at the moment. but by saying things like that, and he's said them about a number of players, he gives them a good feeling and the desire to keep on playing and working hard for their teams.

Where's this quote from? Can't believe for one second that Sven would say something like "he don't give up".

Mellor, did not look good against Southampton. He was far too static, not enough running off the ball to create space or looking for good positions. He also did little in the way of closing down on defenders or harrying the goalie.
For me he would be a good makeweight in a deal for a decent striker, if one were available.
The guy Johnston from palace looked a good player on MOTD last night.

Mellor score's Goals when he is played on a regular basis .Ive said it before and will say again he may not be Flash and he may not have a million tricks up his sleeve but he scores goals. He jus need's polishing and nurturing but above all he need's games .He is the most natural goal scorer ive ever seen hey but dont take my word for it listen to what rushie and Aldridge say about him he was allways the star of the youth squad then the reserve's give him games and he will be good for the first team as well.

Ron I don't mean to be rude, really I don't but the most natural goalscorer you've ever seen? Really? You can't mean that surely. Not unless of course the game between Liverpool and Arsenal this season is the only game of football you have ever watched, ever. I'm all for you believing in the guy and backing up your judgement but that diminishes your point a touch I reckon. Course i could be wrong, I usually am but I'm pretty confident that on this one I'm not.

Mick i can see what your on about but i am going back to youth match's and reserve game's ,The lad has broken every record at both them lvls .I just believe he will continue at the higher levels as well.I may be wrong(i usually am) but i hope not, i gotta admit its been a while since ive been to a first team match and only get to watch em on telly now the same with the reserves but what i have seen ive been impressed with its still only his first year as a first team player and thats only because of injury the touch will come with confidance not to sure about the pace though :)

Mate I defo can't pull rank on anyone on this forum on the frequency of my attendances at matches. I'll give you that his finishes against Olympiacos and Newcastle were one of a natural finisher, but overall he just hasn't got it for me. I think that ultimately he will follow the John Durnin route into lower division football. Will probably score a lot of goals there where pace isn't at such a premium. Still its all about opinions bud and mines at least as uninformed as yours   :D  Be cool and be sure that if he proves me wrong, the humble pie will be sweet.

Lol all we can do Mick is hope :)
i dunno maybe my Judgement is clouded because he is home grown i mean i used to think Thompson was the best thing since sliced bread when he came through the rank's ,Broke my heart when Evans sold him,(or was it GH who sold him??? )

In fairness Ron, whoever sold him I would venture that if Mellor becomes as good a player as David Thompson then that would definately qualify for a slice of pie for me. Injuries aside a very good player in my book and a top pro taboot.
