We have a chance to qualify for the next stage of the Champions league on Wednesday with a 1-0 win and with what? Mellor up front. Couldn't get a game at West Ham in front of Brian Deane and pursued hotly by Neil Warnock for 500k. An absolutely incredible achievement in my view.
I think most pundits are short sighted and call things as they see them in the short term.
Pundits see Liverpool: a huge club with a fantastic history and when Liverpool struggle to match their past achievements, pundits love digging the knife in, saying we are finished etc.
I find it amusing, as almost all pundits seem to forget that Chelsea nearly went to the wall 18 months ago and now they talk about Chelsea if they are one of the top three giants of English football from the year dot.
Pundits see that we are not perfect and thats all they care about. They never look behind the scenes and see whats really going on, nor judge things in context.
I firmly believe that there is also a certain glee among pundits who love see us "struggle" be they former opposition players and managers whom we whipped their asses in the 1970s and 1980s or former Liverpool stars who get some perverse joy from boasting "Well, when I was at Liverpool we were SO much better". Lawernson was a great player for us and I guess he has to be objective as an analyst, but he's far too quick to condemn the club in my view and a certain element of that is his ego thinking that Liverpool's current misfortune boosts his own standing in the game, as he thinks "I was one of the reasons why Liverpool were so good in the 1980s and now that they don't have players like me anymore, they're sh1t."
Lawernson had some success at Brighton but Liverpool was where he made his name and won silverware, and comments like "Gerrard should go to Chelsea" are bang out of order in my opinion. OK, he needs to be objective and even handed given the job he's in, but I thought he was far too quick to volunteer his opinion on Gerrard for my liking.
