Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

We have a chance to qualify for the next stage of the Champions league on Wednesday with a 1-0 win and with what? Mellor up front. Couldn't get a game at West Ham in front of Brian Deane and pursued hotly by Neil Warnock for 500k. An absolutely incredible achievement in my view.

I think most pundits are short sighted and call things as they see them in the short term.

Pundits see Liverpool: a huge club with a fantastic history and when Liverpool struggle to match their past achievements, pundits love digging the knife in, saying we are finished etc.

I find it amusing, as almost all pundits seem to forget that Chelsea nearly went to the wall 18 months ago and now they talk about Chelsea if they are one of the top three giants of English football from the year dot.

Pundits see that we are not perfect and thats all they care about. They never look behind the scenes and see whats really going on, nor judge things in context.

I firmly believe that there is also a certain glee among pundits who love see us "struggle" be they former opposition players and managers whom we whipped their asses in the 1970s and 1980s or former Liverpool stars who get some perverse joy from boasting "Well, when I was at Liverpool we were SO much better". Lawernson was a great player for us and I guess he has to be objective as an analyst, but he's far too quick to condemn the club in my view and a certain element of that is his ego thinking that Liverpool's current misfortune boosts his own standing in the game, as he thinks "I was one of the reasons why Liverpool were so good in the 1980s and now that they don't have players like me anymore, they're sh1t."

Lawernson had some success at Brighton but Liverpool was where he made his name and won silverware, and comments like "Gerrard should go to Chelsea" are bang out of order in my opinion. OK, he needs to be objective and even handed given the job he's in, but I thought he was far too quick to volunteer his opinion on Gerrard for my liking.

On football focus on Saturday he was blase about the ground merger. Im not sure about the I was a great player but he is unemotional when it comes to his old club and thats the kind of guy he strikes me as, probably revels in being a pragmatist

getting sick of the phrase "big 3 & the rest " paraded by the commentators nowadays.

What makes a club big ? Having 1 good season & chelsea are suddenly a big club ? What if roman takes his millions and leave. what will happen to chelsea then ?

If you combine the number of tropies arsenal & chelsea have won, i am sure it will be less than ours.

How many european cups do Chelsea and Arsenal have.......Thats right exactly the same as the blue sh!te.....Zilch. It would be fantastic to see the gooners go out and for us to qualify with a injury hit squad.....Id fuc*in laugh me head off, theyd still probably get more credit than us!
Chopper:Look, you're not still angry at me about the leg, are you?
Neville Bartos : Nah, forget about it.
Chopper : Because I don't know if you remember, Neville, but I had that bloody shotgun pointed at your head. I reconsidered and dropped it down to your kneecap. Remember?

John Barnes' Granny wrote:I tend to agree, but to be objective, its a bit early yet to liken Benitez to Shankly (I know you aren't really doing that Mick, you're saying he could have a similar impact).

From an earlier post, I get the feeling that Rafa will be succesful in making a step change as great as that achieved by Shankly. Totally different personalities, but the same passion and desire for LFC to succeed. Valencia, like Huddersfield before them are crazy for not recognising what they have let slip away.

There is no doubt Rafa is a class act.
Moores and Parry need congratulating for biting the bullet, sacking Houllier and relacing him with Benitez !
My feeling is that he will be as influential on the club as Shankly, totally different personalities etc. but also a different age with new and demandiing pressures arising from player power and TV mpney etc that demand a new approach. Rafa appears to have the qualities to cope with the demands of the current football scene, combined with a passion that both ignites and earns respect from players.
A great catch for the club and respect for Moores and Parry on this one !!

given whats happend with injuries, i am content with how things have gone.  We are still in with a shout in the champions league, if we win our game in hand we will be 5th and our main problem is we are not scoring goals.....hardly surprising seeing we have no strikers.

i think we will have some front men come in during the Jan window and its then, the second half of the season, i think our team will start coming together.

Wednesday game is vital, we need the money, we need to be in the champions league with some strikers....then it will be interesting.

I still think we will finish 3rd  :)

As far as goal scoring goes, imo we will score more once Gerrard is back to being 100 percent and also once Baros returns [which is supposedly this week]. We are 5th in the Premiership as far as most goals scored and 15th as far as least goals conceded.

Being the "underdogs" is good for us in a way. There is no pressure and not a lot of expectation so when we do beat Arsenal every dumbar$e pundit fall flat on their ar$es. Some of their comments make you wonder if they had every played football or have they forgotten how to.
