if we do finish this season with CL in the bag id be surprised if suarez leaves. he wants that platform and imo he would be more than happy to get it with us.

How about this for an early present? Luis Suarez has today signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool!

Luis Suarez today committed his future to Liverpool Football Club by signing a new long-term contract at Melwood.

The 26-year-old Uruguayan insists he is 'proud' and 'delighted' at having put pen to paper on the new extended deal and is focused on helping the club achieve its ambitions of sustainable success both domestically and in Europe.

The Reds' No.7 also paid tribute to the supporters, citing the 'special relationship' he has with them as a key factor in reaffirming his commitment to Liverpool.

Suarez joined the club in January 2011 and is widely regarded as one of the most talented players in world football. This season alone, Suarez has scored 17 goals in 11 Barclays Premier League starts.

"I am delighted to have agreed a new deal with Liverpool and have my future secured for the long term," said Suarez.

"We have some great players and the team is growing and improving all the time. I believe I can achieve the ambitions of winning trophies and playing at the very highest level with Liverpool. My aim is to help get us there as quickly as possible.

"Without doubt the backing I have received from the Liverpool fans has influenced my decision. I am so proud to represent them and go out to do my best for them every time I pull on the shirt.

"We have a special relationship; they have love for me and in return I love them back. I will always do my best for them and hopefully we can achieve success together."

Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers, said the news will give everyone a lift: "This is fantastic news for everyone associated with the club; the team, the owners and most importantly the supporters.

"Luis is a world-class talent and securing his services is crucial for what we are trying to achieve here.

"What's most important and most exciting is that, at just 26 years old, his best years are still ahead of him and we now know we'll be seeing him reach that potential in a Liverpool shirt."

Principal owner, John W Henry, believes it shows the progress being made on and off the field: "We are committed to working hard to keep our best players and this is an indication that we are moving in the right direction and moving at a pace that impresses one of the best players in world football.

"The club has made major strides forward in recent years and we are all committed to delivering the success our supporters want and deserve."

Liverpool chairman, Tom Werner, said: "This demonstrates our commitment, as an ownership group, to building a team that competes at the highest level both in the Barclays Premier League and in Europe.

"Our primary motive is to do what is best for Liverpool Football Club and today's news is another significant step forward on this journey."

It doesn't mean much to be honest.  its all smiley faces and great words but I wouldn't be surprised if we've had to put a buyout clause in there.  Suarez knows he deserves CL football and I doubt he'd sign a contract that gives him no exit options.

I think he is happy to stay though if we progress enough.

So you would rather we don't offer him any extension, or that he shouldn't agree to extend his present contract with the club?  :oh:

Ensures he attracts top price so security for him and the football club.

Good work by the club tidying this one up so we are in the strongest position possible whatever the future holds for Suarez.

I does mean much actually.

Primarily it guarantees we get the maximum value possible (based on contract length) for him should he leave.

Nail on head... possibly. If its a contract extention then correct. BUT...

Nowhere, does it state the length of the contract, which I find a worry.

He was already contracted to 2016...

We all know in football that a 4 year contract is realistically a 2 year contract. For most players under the age of 30/31.

Hopefully we can give him what he derserves and he can finish his career here. :)

going by other media it seems anyone would have to pay a hell of a lot more to even to let them talk to him, in all it means he will be here next year and not much more than that.

i think by signing this contract luis is basically saying if we finish in the top 4 he`ll be here next season.
after weighing up the pro`s and cons he`s probably thought to himself that if he stays here -

1. he`ll be the main man (the team will be built around him and set up for him)
2. he`ll be surrounded by team mates he gets on with and not prima donna`s who may get jealous if he starts stealing their thunder, the likes of madrid and barca are notoriously political behind the scenes with factions and cliques in the dressing room.
3. he`ll be plying his trade in the most watched domestic league in the world for a club that has a massive worldwide fanbase
4. he`ll be playing in the CL for a club synonymous with the competition
5. he`ll be earning nearly a million pounds sterling a month.

there`s a lot of plusses there, just need to finish in the top 4 now!
if we manage to do that the future will be very bright, a lot of players will want to come here and play alongside suarez.
