I'm more than happy and confident in my judgement in Sturridge. Its funny how the people having a go, are the same ones who absolutely raved over Enrique after his first twenty games and are the same people now saying he's poor and they want that f*cking Cissoko to play instead of him.

20 games for the club and people are saying he's better than the likes of Torres, Rooney, van Persie...

What did you think of the quality of his goal Saturday Stu ?

What does that have to do with anything?

He wants to score goals so if he is a bit on the selfish side and some of his decisions are a bit on the dubious side I'll forgive him. When Torres went into grumpy mode we would have begged for somebody with Danny's propensity for scoring. He is a key reason why we have had such a good run of form since January. He just doesn't score though does he. He's has got several assists. And against West Brom he won five free kicks in dangerous positions. BR has done a great job with him and his value is now a lot more than we paid. I think I'll save my criticism for more worthy causes

I've never said the lads a bad player.

He isn't, he'll always score goals. My issue is when people start calling him the best in the league.

First, he'd have to be the best in his own club... which quite frankly, he's absolutely nowhere near. Not even in the same galaxy.

Great players make the right decision more often than not, Sturridge doesn't.

Stu I asked you what thought of his goal as its a sturridge thread and he scored a boss goal. Simple as that. By the way Suarez at times makes poor decisions as well. Suarez is our best player but we also have a top player in sturridge. Sturridge has far more to his game than andy cole had as well.

I don't think Andy Cole is a bad analogy for Sturridge actually.  To be honest if he scores as many goals for us as Cole did during his peak years at Newcastle and United then I'll be well happy.  I think that could be about his level.

I thought at best he'd be of a similar standard to Defoe when we signed him, but he looks better than that.  I actually didn't want us to sign him, shows what I know!

I think Stu is right, good Premiership striker but not going to be world class in a million years - he's 24 already FFS.

His decision making won't always be great, but he has pace, power and can finish.  He might not be world class, but his goal on Saturday was.  Absolutely brilliant goal.

Good post. One thing sturridge has that cole didn't is a shot from range but I see what you mean about levels. Cole scored a shed loads of goals and hopefully sturridge will carry on doing.

Defoe is more intelligent with his passing, speed of thought and movement, he's sharper. Defoe only really becomes greedy inside in the box. In terms of Strength Sturridge is slightly stronger and a bit better at fighting to retain a ball and I think he'll score slightly more than Defoe would because of his extra strength. I'd probably lean towards Defoe at his peak but there isn't much in it.

I don't believe he's a better player than Cole was either. Cole was far better at linking up the play and playing on the counter attack than Sturridge. To often a ball goes into Sturridge and he takes far to many touches slowing the pace of an attack down. He's alot better when he's the final player to touch a ball in an attack.

Defoe is a strange one.  He was a very late developer in terms of being able to hold the ball up and link play - I'm talking about the last 2-3 seasons and he's 30/31 now.  He spent most of his career being a pure finisher who offered little else to the team.

Compare Sturridge now with a 24yr old Defoe and there was absolutely no comparison, Sturridge is a better player.  I'd say even Sturridge now is a better player than Defoe in his peak years 27-29 or so, but not by a massive amount.

I think if Sturridge can reproduce his form over the past 12 months over several seasons then it would support my belief that he's of a similar level to Cole.  Cole did it over a sustained period of time though and that's what Sturridge has to do now.

Superb player, who should be one of the first names on the team sheet, every week.  Even now, I laugh when I think of Chelsea selling him to us for £12 million 

He's worth double that now

Chelsea sold him because they have better players.

I disagree on Defoe, I think had Defoe played for Liverpool the general consensus would be slightly different. There isn't much in it for me and its splitting hairs. For me, I'd prefere Defoe as I think he's the better "footballer", Sturridge would probably get you more goals all round though.

Your point on him having to produce consistently to be Cole's "equivalent" is accurate for me.

He also has more allround ability IMO. Also, remember Cole couldn't hit a cow's @rse with a banjo at times, he'd need at least 5 decent chances to put 1 away, wasn't the most clinical of poachers.
