In my opinon he is a waste of space and scoring 2 goals and a handful of assists does not make him a good player. I expect this of him every time he plays for us and so far he has let me down far, far more than not. He is spineless and hides every opportunity he gets. Yes he has improved of late, but as I said before, from  where I was sitting he did what he normally does which is basically fu'ck all.
We are coming to the end of the season where we need to slog our guts out and battle to finish as high as we can. Downing is a luxury we can ill afford, simply because he hasnt the brains or the balls for a fight.

He was suffering from sickness today as has already been pointed out he went off injured though it does raise a question as to why he started the game if he wasn't right.

I think you could argue that last season he didn't show enough commitment or desire but I don't think that's been the case this season.

One of the better players? He's been better this season I agree, but far from our better players. He's still a mediocre player and his position is something we should improve (not urgently) on.

Downing has been one of our better players this season - still need to see more but that's valid for everyone on the pitch.

Downing's potential is almost 2nd to none but so is the distance from fulfilling it. The lad has a mental block which he can't seem to remove. This guy is worth at 10-15 goals a year with the same amount of assists. Unfortunately he keeps hitting his glass ceiling.

agree with this  :nod
id rather see tom ince in that position tbh. a good scenario would be one where we have ince and downing rotating that slot between them.

I have given Downing credit for his improvement on this thread but I'm certainly not getting carried away. He contributed considerably towards Kenny's demise. And what's all this tosh about Downing having a good season. Our Stewie didn't even start to do anything remotely useful this season until he was told by BR that he could go in January. His season didn't even start until late December. It's just that type of attitude that resulted in us having an awful start to the season. Yes he has had a reasonable three months but do you seriously believe that their would be a queue to buy him at £20m. Sorry I live in the real world and I'm not going to get massively excited about a player that ponced about like a prima donna for a very long time and couldn't even get an assist to his name. He even had the audacity to signal to the Kop that they should shut up when he eventually had the decency to actually score a goal. He can do a job but I wouldn't be bothered if we moved him on in the summer.

Great post
The audacity of the cu'nt to do that! Some people have the memory capacity of a goldfish and are easily pleased.
If we have any aspirations of becoming a top 4 club again then Downing needs Fu*king off pronto. If, I say IF we have to use him then bring him on as an impact sub when we are winning and the opposition is tired and he can run round to his hearts content

Liverpool fans calling Liverpool players c@nts !!

Maybe the players play as well as the support they get from the fans.

I have NEVER seen ANY player tell the Kop to shush in over four decades of watching LFC.
Beyond belief and comprehension, and the likes of you making excuses for it by blaming the supporters shows where youre coming from

I don't blame a player for telling his critics to shut up

When players are getting booed and insulted then its fair game for that player to shove those boos and insults back down the throats of people who should be supporting the players.

As witnessed again yesterday - the support at Anfield is dire.

If you think you are entitled to call Downing a c&nt then he is entitled to tell you to shut the f*ck up.

Lads, its pure frustration on the fans part as we accept another season has been written off to mediocrity and passive resistance. Its a bitter pill to swallow that we're a Joe Average club and that realistically we're still 3 years away from a serious challenge. Not a fly by the seat of your pants challenge, but one built on solid foundations. This forum has lost so many members, I'm sure they're simply too gutted to keep on with the banter. Tell a player he's not up to it? Why not? In Downing's case? Deffo.

your probably right reg, fans are frustrated and downing is an easy target but personally i thought we missed him yesterday (the fit version).
one thing downing is pretty good at (when he is in a bit of space) is picking out a player with a cross or a pull back, yesterday players were getting into dangerous positions but crossing it to no one.
another thing downing is good at (for a winger) is retaining possession, some wingers get their heads down and run up blind alleys but downing tends to not give the ball away cheaply, if something isnt on he wont attempt it, if there`s no one in the box he wont cross it and if there are two defenders in front of him he wont try to be maradona, he`d rather recycle the ball and keep probing, we needed a bit of that yesterday, there were far too many fancy flicks and tricks.
instead of just doing the basics, keeping the ball and building pressure the likes of suarez and sturridge were doing their best luis garcia impressions and giving west ham the opportunity to clear their lines.
the things we were trying was five a side stuff, we had no composure in the final 3rd at all.

So when another player grabs Suarez by the nuts and Suarez understandably reacts he is heavily criticised by by some posters on here for not simply walking away and being the bigger man. Yet the same posters are quite happy that Downing who for the most part has been pathetic has the right to abuse the Kop when he actually managed to score a goal after a crazy number of games. YOU COULDN'T MAKE IT UP !!! If anybody should behave in a dignified manner it's a player that has contributed very little and not lived up to his massive price tag.

I have given up arguing with narrow minded goldfish who defend one player for blatant disrespect yet slaughter another who defends himself. One being a waste of Fu*king space, while the other our best player for years.
I dont agree with booing but we have every right to criticise someone who very rarely puts a shift in and yet has the nerve to tell us to stop giving him stick because he had scored a goal after two years?
Downing could have been a decent player and done well for us but he either hasnt got the intelligence or the balls to do it (or both) so I personally cant wait to see the back of him and bring in someone who will.
